Toledo Walleye News Release
Walleye Notes
Win streak runs to five with perfect week: Back to back home wins this past weekend pushed Toledo's winning streak to five straight games tying the previous best this season set from December 16 through December 26. Forward Evan Rankin returned to the Walleye lineup and scored twice Friday night in a 5-1 win over Evansville. Saturday, goaltender Tom McCollum made a rehab start with 25 saves as the Walleye held off Wheeling 4-3.
Sold out Huntington the new normal: Another pair of home games this past week and another pair of standing room only crowds with 7,625 Friday night and another 8,000 Saturday. Saturday was the eighth sellout this year (in 14 home contests) for the Walleye and the sixth in the past seven games, which has never been done before in Walleye history. Every Saturday night home tilt has seen a standing room crowd this year (six total). With the big weekend, Toledo is averaging 7,059 per game second-most in the ECHL to Fort Wayne (7,406).
Berschbach's backpack full of points: By collecting, at least, a point in both games this past weekend, Shane Berschbach has extended his point streak to six games. In those contests, he has collected a total of 12 points (6G, 6A) and he now leads Toledo in scoring with 12 goals and 20 assists for 32 points. He is tied for tenth in scoring for the ECHL.
A short call to the A for defensemen and Paterson : Both defensemen Joel Chouinard and Jared Nightingale received the call to the AHL for one game Sunday from the Chicago Wolves. Both played with neither picking up a point in a 4-3 overtime win over Grand Rapids. The two were returned to Toledo on Monday. After Tom McCollum made his rehab start Saturday in Toledo he was reassigned by the Detroit Red Wings to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Goaltender Jake Paterson was reassigned to Toledo today from Grand Rapids. Paterson did start one game for the Griffins, taking a 4-3 loss on January 13 at Charlotte with 38 saves on 42 shots.
Nearing the top of the league: Goaltender Jeff Lerg is tied for second in the ECHL for wins with 16. Forward Tyler Sikura ranks seventh in the ECHL in scoring for first year players with 24 (9G, 15A) points. Defenseman Joel Chouinard is tied for eighth among ECHL defensemen in points with 20 (5G, 15A).
Let's get Grizzly : For the first time ever, Toledo and Utah will play each other when the two teams meet for three straight this weekend at the Huntington Center. It's a top-flight matchup with the Grizzlies coming to Toledo as the top team in the West Division with a record of 22-1-3-2-0 this year. This is the second time this season that the Walleye have played the same team in three straight games over three straight days (at Manchester from November 13 through 15).
Promotional fun : Friday night is Polish Heritage Night sponsored by Stanley's Market featuring a pregame Polish Buffet and Polish Themed music all night long. Saturday night the Walleye celebrate one of hockey's biggest personalities-- Don Cherry. Toledo will be wearing the Cherry inspired specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game benefitting the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life. Sunday is FINions night at the Huntington Center featuring an appearance from the Minions themselves for a free meet and great in the concourse before the game and during intermissions.
