QUACK TRACKS
Stop Sign
Yesterday's loss to Kalamazoo halted the Mallards' three-game winning streak.
Busy
The Mallards went 2-1-0 while playing three games in 48 hours last weekend. With yesterday's loss they dropped to 3-2-0 this season when playing a third game in three days.
Race
The second place Mallards now trail the Fort Wayne Komets by five points in the race for the top spot in the Midwest Division. The Mallards head into this weekend's two game series with Indy three points ahead of the third place Fuel. The Mallards have played two fewer games than Indy and have played three more games than the Komets.
Sudden Death
Matt Neal's goal with just 19 seconds left in overtime gave the Mallards a 3-2 win over Kalamazoo last Friday. With that victory the Mallards improved to 3-1 in games decided in overtime this season.
Shooting Gallery
The Mallards took a team season high 41 shots on goal in last Friday's overtime win over Kalamazoo.
No Chill
Kevin Henderson scored with 2:51 left in the third period Saturday to give the Mallards a 2-1 win in Evansville- their third victory in as many games at the Ford Center this season.
One-Sided
Yesterday's 7-2 loss to Kalamazoo was the Mallards most lopsided defeat of the season. The Mallards yesterday lost by five goals for the first time since they were blanked 5-0 by the Brahmas in Fort Worth on November 28, 2012 in the Central Hockey League.
Red Light District
The Mallards yesterday also matched a season high for goals allowed first established in a 7-4 loss to Fort Wayne on January 8. The Mallards had allowed a total of just three goals while winning three straight games prior to yesterday's setback.
Failure to Launch
The Mallards gave up four first period goals yesterday. They surrendered the first goal to Kalamazoo's Curtis Valk just 17 seconds into the game and allowed a goal to the Wings' Lane Scheidl with just 1.6 seconds left in the first. Yesterday marked the first time the Mallards have been scored upon four times in one period since they gave up four goals in the opening period of a 7-5 win in Fort Wayne on December 29, 2014.
Century
Kevin Henderson's shorthanded strike early in the second period yesterday was the Mallards' one hundredth goal of the season. The Mallards are three games over .500 despite having been outscored 112-101.
Streaking
Austin Coldwell is in the midst of a team season best eight-game point-scoring streak (1-9-10) and eight-game assist streak.
Four Score
Matt Carey established a team season best by scoring in four straight games- and producing a total of five goals during that run- before going without a goal Saturday in Evansville.
Between the Pipes
The Mallards yesterday changed goaltenders during a game for the first time this season when Brody Hoffman replaced Steve Michalek at the start of the second period. Hoffman made 38 saves in Saturday's win over Evansville and has now faced at least 38 shots in each of his last five starts.
On the Road Again
The Mallards play their next five games on the road. This weekend's trip to Indianapolis will be followed by games in Kalamazoo (January 29), Cincinnati (January 30) and Toledo (January 31).
Rook
Neal, who took over the team lead in goals (11) with last Friday's overtime game winner, is tied for sixth among ECHL rookies in goals and tied for eighth among rookies in points (26).
Iron Mike
Mike Monfredo is tied for third among ECHL defensemen in assists (20) and tied for fourth among defensemen in points (24).
Special Teams
The Mallards have scored just once in their last 18 power plays and are now tied for thirteenth in the ECHL on the man advantage (17.0 percent). After giving up four power play goals in their three games last weekend (on 16 shorthanded situations) the Mallards are now tied for eighth in the league in penalty killing (85.6 percent). The Mallards both scored (Henderson) and allowed (Justin Taylor) a shorthanded goal yesterday against Kalamazoo. The Mallards have how scored four shorthanded goals this season and given up three.
