December 20, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings out played the Toledo Walleye for a majority of Friday night's game; however, two goals in a span of 20 seconds for the Walleye gave them a shocking 2-1 come-from-behind victory during the first half of Bell's Winter White Blue Ice Weekend.
Skating to a scoreless first period, Kalamazoo generated 14 shots in the opening 20 minutes. The K-Wings best scoring chances occurred during a five-minute power-play that was created by a match penalty on Richard Nedomlel for a hit to the head of Yanni Gourde 1:54 into the contest.
The K-Wings struck in the second period with a goal from Justin Taylor (4th). Stopped to the right of the net, Taylor jammed in a Ray Kaunisto rebound 8:15 into the period.
The K-Wings posted 21 shots in the middle stanza, a season-high for shots in a single period.
Sticking around in the third period, Toledo pulled even with 2:42 remaining in regulation with a goal from David Gilbert (3rd). The equalizer was setup from a pass from behind the K-Wings net by Scott Arnold.
The Walleye jumped ahead 20 seconds later with a penalty shot tally from Pat Mullane (1st), who was making his Toledo season debut.
Kalamazoo out shot Toledo 48-28. The 48 shots were a season-high for the K-Wings. Former NHL goaltender Hannu Toivonen stole the show for the Walleye stopping a season-high 47 shots for the victory, which snapped a seven-game (0-5-2-0) road winless streak for Toledo.
The K-Wings and Walleye will square off against tomorrow, Saturday, December 21st for a 7:30 p.m. face-off during the second half of Bell's Winter White Blue Ice Weekend. Kalamazoo will be holding a silent action during the game for their special Bell's Winter White jerseys.
