New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Trenton, NJ - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (32-37) beat the Trenton Thunder (35-35) 8-4 Tuesday night at Waterfront Park in front of 4,808.
The Fisher Cats jumped ahead in the top of the second as Trenton starter Matt DeSalvo (1-1) walked five batters in the inning, including walking in three runs before getting lifted after one and two-thirds innings. New Hampshire scored four runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead on five walks and two singles. DeSalvo ended his day after just five outs having allowed four runs on five walks and two hits.
Trenton got one back in the bottom of the second to make it 4-1 against lefty David Purcey (1-0), but New Hampshire center fielder David Smith led off the third with a solo homer, his ninth, off of righty Scott Patterson to put the Fisher Cats on top 5-1. The Thunder closed within 5-3 in the bottom of the third as designated hitter Bronson Sardinha hit a two-run double, scoring shortstop J.T. Stotts and center fielder Brett Gardner.
The Fisher Cats got those runs back in the fourth thanks to back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning by center fielder Justin Singleton and catcher Curtis Thigpen that knocked Patterson out of the game. Thigpen would later score on a sac fly from right fielder Ron Davenport, making it 7-3. Trenton kept it close thanks to lefty Charlie Manning, who retired all 12 batters he faced in relief. Righty Jeff Kennard came in to start the eighth and the first batter he faced, first baseman Chip Cannon, launched a solo shot, his 12th, for an 8-3 lead.
Purcey left after seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Righty Paul Phillips, who joined the Fisher Cats a day earlier, entered to make his Double-A debut and was charged with an unearned run. He struck out Bronson Sardinha, but he reached base on a passed ball on the third strike. Third baseman Eric Duncan then drove him home with an RBI double to make it 8-4. Righty Justin James pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish Trenton off. New Hampshire left fielder Adam Lind went 0-for-4 to snap a 10-game hit streak.
The teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 PM in Trenton as New Hampshire's Mike MacDonald (6-4, 3.81) starts against Thunder righty Jeff Karstens (3-0, 2.66). The Fisher Cats return home to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday, June 27 against Trenton at 6:35 PM. For tickets or information, call (603) 641-2005 or visit nhfishercats.com.
