Portland power surge too much for Defenders in 9-0 rain delayed loss
June 20, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
The Portland Sea Dogs knocked Pat Misch around with a flurry of home runs at hitter friendly Hadlock Field on Tuesday as the Defenders fell 9-0 with a 1:53 rain delay coming in the 7th inning.
The Defenders tried to make it back-to-back wins against the first place team in the North Division of the Eastern League, but Kason Gabbard and company would not allow it. Chris Durbin got the scoring started in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a solo home run to make the score 1-0, Portland. Misch was able to hold the Portland bats from further damage until the 4th inning when Jeremy West struck with his first of two home runs on the evening. It was in the 5th inning that the Sea Dogs really distanced themselves from Connecticut with a Chad Spann three run homer, that was immediately followed by Jeremy West's second home run of the night to make the score 6-0.
In the mean time, Kason Gabbard cruised along, retiring nine straight for a stretch from the 3rd to the 6th inning. Gabbard entered the start having faced the Defenders three times without having allowed an earned run, and that would not change. Gabbard pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. In the bottom of the 7th inning with Portland in front 7-0, the rains came down hard on Hadlock Field causing a rain delay of almost 1:53. When play resumed, the Portland offense kept on cranking out the hits off of reliever Jason Waddell, scoring two runs in the 7th inning to make the score 9-0, and that would be the final.
Kason Gabbard received his 9th win, with four coming against Connecticut, and Pat Misch fell to 5-4. On Wednesday, Geno Espinelli (4-2) will make the start in place of the injured Jesse Floyd, who left his last start in the third inning with hamstring tightness. The lefty will be opposed by Portland right hander Chris Smith (7-3). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
