The Bisons took an early lead against Red Wings starter Logan Darnell. Jesus Montero blooped a two-out single down the right field line, scoring Andy Burns for a 1-0 Buffalo lead. The Wings went down in short order in the bottom of the first, but Jorge Polanco managed a sharp single to left field. Darnell settled down in the second inning, but allowed a double from David Adams.
Buffalo starter Scott Diamond, who pitched for the Red Wings during parts of the 2011-2013 seasons, held the Red Wings in check in the second while striking out one batter. Dalton Pompey extended his hitting streak to nine games in the top of the third by beating out a throw to first to start the inning for the Bisons. The Wings managed to escape the inning unscathed by turning a 3-6-3 double play.
Walker launched a 403-ft home run to left field for his 12th homer of the season in the bottom of the third to tie the game up at 1-1. Of Walker's 37 hits this season, 18 have been a home run or gone for extra bases.
Darnell ran into some trouble in the fourth inning, as Buffalo notched two straight singles by A.J. Jimenez and Darrell Ceciliani. One batter later, Darnell was hit on the left shoulder by a line drive by Adams, but remained in the game. With the bases loaded, Darnell managed to get Alexi Casilla to pop out to left to end the inning.
The Wings struggled to put anything together in the fourth. Diamond cruised threw the middle of the Wings order, as he struck out two batters to pick up his third and fourth strikeouts of the game. Darnell answered back in the bottom of the fourth by only allowing baserunner with a walk.
Wilfredo Tovar began the bottom of the fifth by making his way to third after Domonic Brown botched a catch in right field, with the play scored a three-base error. Buck Britton hit a sacrifice fly to score Tovar and give the Wings a 2-1 lead. John Ryan Murphy launched his first home run of the season to straightaway center to extend the Wings lead to 3-1. James Beresford then walked to extend his on-base streak to 19 games.
The Bisons scored another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Darrell Ceciliani to decrease their deficit to 3-2. Darnell then managed two straight outs to end the inning.
Polanco got things started in the bottom of the sixth with a single to left field, but Kennys Vargas hit into a 6-4-3 double play one play later. With the temperature dropping below 60 degrees, Eddie Rosario's bat stayed hot as he hit a double to left field with two outs. Tovar singled up the middle to score Rosario and extend the Wings' lead to 4-2.
Buffalo put runners at first and second base with one out in the top of the seventh, and Marcus Walden relieved Darnell with clean-up batter Montero due up. A groundout moved the runners over to second and third, and Walden got Brown to fly out to right to escape the jam.
Darnell (6-5) worked 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs. He walked three, struck out three, and threw 100 pitches - 61 for strikes.
In the bottom of the seventh, Walker worked Diamond for a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and went to third base when catcher A.J. Jimenez had to throw out Murphy at first base after a dropped third strike. Diamond was replaced by Chad Girodo, who promptly gave up an RBI hit to Beresford past a drawn in infield. The hit made the score 5-2 Wings, and Logan Shafer followed with a single. The inning ended when umpire Joey Amaral called Shafer out on an obstruction call for his slide into second base.
Diamond (4-6) pitched 6.1 innings with six hits allowed, five runs (three earned), and two walks with six strikeouts. Diamond threw 100 pitches, 60 for strikes.
Sean Burnett pitched the ninth inning for the Red Wings, after Walden contributed 1.2 scoreless innings. Burnett set down the side, striking out Montero to end the game and record his first save.
Buffalo out-hit the Red Wings 12-8.
