Crouse Cruises against PawSox
June 7, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Hens were back at McCoy Stadium on Tuesday night to take on the PawSox in game two of their series, after dropping Monday's pitchers duel 2-1. Matt Crouse was able to continue the dominance on the mound for Toledo, as the young left-hander hurled a quality start against the potent PawSox offense.
Countering Crouse for Pawtucket was former big league starter Joe Kelly, who looked to put a stranglehold on the series with a victory against the Hens. However, the Hens did as they have done a lot lately and that is score early. Getting the bats rolling for Toledo was the middle of the lineup, who's been scalding hot at the dish. Singles by Chad Huffman and Tyler Collins put runners at first and third with no one out, as Casey McGehee stepped to the plate against Joe Kelly. McGehee came through as he has done all month long, scoring Huffman on an RBI single to right to take the lead.
After a sac fly off the bat of Jordany Valdespin, scoring Collins the Hens were in business with an early 2-0. Matt Crouse controlled the Pawtucket offense throughout the warm Rhode Island night, despite a solo homer on the home half of the second off the bat of Jantzen Witte.
In the fifth with the Hens leading 2-1, JaCoby Jones came through in just his second game in a Toledo uniform, plating Jordany Valdespin for his second RBI in as many games. Crouse's night would end in the seventh with two runners on, as the left-hander scattered just two runs on six hits over his 6 1/3 innings, striking out four. Following Crouse's exit Angel Nesbitt was called on to keep the lead in tact in the 8th. The hard throwing reliever found himself in a jam with two on and no one out. Nevertheless, the right-hander escaped trouble inducing a fielder's choice, a fly out, and a strikeout as Toledo headed to the ninth with a 3-2 lead.
In the ninth flame throwing Bruce Rondon kept the one run lead intact and shut the door with authority, striking out the side as he earned the save, his sixth of the season.
The two teams are back in action on Wednesday, with the first pitch slated for 7:05 PM.
