Steve Lombardozzi Returns to Chiefs

June 7, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs are excited to announce the addition of infielder/outfielder Steve Lombardozzi to the team's roster. As a corresponding move, infielder Kevin Keyes was transferred to Double-A Harrisburg.

Lombardozzi was signed to a minor-league contract by the Nationals on Monday out of the independent Atlantic League, where he played for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Lombardozzi's .367 batting average and 61 hits currently lead the Atlantic League. He played in 40 games with the Blue Crabs, scoring 27 runs, collecting 10 walks and stealing eight bases.

The signing returns Lombardozzi to the Nationals, his first and most successful professional organization. Lombardozzi was drafted by Washington in 2008 and spent six seasons (2008-13) with the organization. In his only season with the Chiefs in 2011, Lombardozzi posted a .310/.354/.408 slash line in 69 games, with 19 extra-base hits, 21 walks and 14 stolen bases. He collected 27 multi-hit games for Syracuse. From 2011 to 2013, Lombardozzi played in 257 games as a utility player with the Nationals.

In 2014, Lombardozzi split time between the Baltimore Orioles and their I.L. affiliate, the Norfolk Tides. Last season, he played for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and their I.L. affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians. 2016 marks Lombardozzi's ninth professional year and fourth in the International League.

The Chiefs play the Louisville Bats Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. in the second of a four-game series. Tickets to that game and all other Chiefs games are available and can be purchased at syracusechiefs.com, by calling 474-7833 or in person at the NBT Bank Stadium ticket office.
