Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Charlotte Knights scored early and pulled away for an 8-1 win over the RailRiders on Monday night at PNC Field. The margin matched SWB's 8-1 loss to Buffalo on April 20 as its most lopsided 2016 setback. The contest made Charlotte the IL South's only winning team and dropped the RailRiders into fourth place in the IL North. SWB stood in first over the weekend.
TROUBLE AT HOME?: The RailRiders dropped their third straight at home for the first time since four consecutive defeats between two homestands from June 25-July 4, 2015. The franchise has not lost five straight at home since dropping five from July 19-23, 2013. That team lost five in a row in NEPA twice to set the RailRiders-era record. Last night's loss dropped the team to .500 at home (15-15).
GETTING DEFENSIVE: The RailRiders were charged with two more errors and their IL-worst 10th passed ball just a day after they made five miscues and fell one shy of the franchise's single-game record. The then-Red Barons made six errors in a game twice in 1997. Those tough days came May 17 at Syracuse and July 4 versus Rochester. The 1997 SWB squad went 66-76 and tied Norfolk for the IL's worst fielding percentage (.971). The 2016 RailRiders entered Sunday with a league-low 31 errors and an IL-best .985 fielding percentage. All seven of the errors made over the two games since have come on the infield. Dan Fiorito made both of last night's mistakes, joining Donovan Solano as the only SWB fielders charged with multiple errors in a single game all year. Fiorito has made three errors over the last two games, all at third base. He was charged with two errors over 18 games played in the field at Double-A. When Monday's game ended, the RailRiders had a third error that was charged to Nick Swisher on Matt Davidson's pop near the plate in the seventh. It was later changed to an RBI single.
VERSATILITY: Last night's lineup had Aaron Judge make his third start of the year in center field while Ben Gamel got the nod in right for the second time at Triple-A this season.
RISPY BUSINESS: The RailRiders went 0-for-5 with men in scoring position yesterday. Over their last 10 games, they have gone 19-for-92 (.207) with runners in prime real estate. Seven of those hits came in Friday's 10-3 win, the team's only triumph among its last five.
KNIGHTED: From 2005-13, SWB did not lose the season series to Charlotte at home or overall, going a composite 45-26 and 25-12 in NEPA. That has changed with a 5-10 overall mark and 2-5 home record versus the Knights between 2014 (2-6, 1-3) and 2015 (3-4, 1-2).
OFF THE RAILS: Judge went 1-for-3 with a walk, his second stolen base in as many days and the team's lone run scored...He has gone 6-for-14 with three doubles, three RBIs and three walks over the last four games, scoring four runs...He entered Friday night's game in a 7-for-60 (.117) slide with no extra-base hits (SLG .117), three RBIs, four walks (.206 OBP) and 21 strikeouts over his prior 16 games...His third-inning double on Friday ended an 0-for-24 drought...Gamel went 1-for-3 with a walk...Over his last 12 games, Gamel has gone 15-for-49, slashing .306/.382/.449/.831...He has multiple hits in three of his last five games including three doubles...Johnny Barbato stranded an inherited runner in the sixth, but Neal Cotts allowed both of his two inherited men to cross in the eighth, ending the bullpen's run at 13 straight inherited runners stranded...Charlotte's top three hitters went a combined 9-for-15 with three doubles, a homer, five RBIs and four runs scored...The entire RailRiders team went 4-for-31, all singles.
GOING TO EXTREMES: Charlotte ranks among the IL's best in multiple offensive categories: HR (2nd, 54), SB (4th, 45); and lead the league in batting average (.271), on-base percentage (.339), slugging (.412) and OPS (.752). The team also ranks among the IL's worst pitching-wise: ERA (Worst, 5.03), WHIP (2nd-worst, 1.42), H/9IP (Worst, 9.5), HR (Worst, 53), K/9IP (Worst, 6.5) and K:BB ratio (2nd-worst, 2.00).
