Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk used a solid outing from Yovani Gallardo and a big game from Mike Yastrzemski to charge past the Durham Bulls 7-3 Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Making his second rehab start since being placed on Baltimore's disabled list on April 23, Gallardo (1-0) earned the win after allowing three runs on four hits over five innings of work. The 30-year-old right-hander walked two and struck out five, throwing 49 of his 85 pitches for strikes. He yielded a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout before surrendering a two-run home run on a 3-0 pitch to Jake Goebbert in the fourth inning.
Yastrzemski finished a triple short of hitting for the cycle as he powered Norfolk's 11-hit attack. He doubled home a run in the first frame, then belted a three-run homer in the second inning that gave the Tides an early 6-0 advantage. He later singled in the seventh inning, giving him his second three-hit performance at the Triple-A level.
In 21 games since joining Norfolk on May 16, Yastrzemski has now registered 14 extra-base hits, batting .309 with three home runs, nine doubles and 12 runs batted in.
Audry Perez homered and doubled in the win, while L.J. Hoes singled, walked twice and scored two runs to help Norfolk salvage a split of the two-game set.
The two clubs continue their home-and-home series Wednesday night, with the series shifting to Durham Bulls Athletic Park for a 7:05 start. Odrisamer Despaigne (1-6, 3.97) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by left-hander Adam Wilk (1-6, 3.56).
Notes: Pedro Beato worked a scoreless eighth inning, giving him 13 consecutive outings in which he's not allowed an earned run...Oliver Drake struck out two in a scoreless ninth, extending his scoreless appearance streak to nine games...Norfolk's victory snapped a six-game winning streak for Durham...Trey Mancini singled and scored a run, and he's now hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, batting .359 (14-39) over that stretch...The Tides and Bulls have split eight games this season.
