Walk-filled first inning downs Fightins

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (76-61) walked six times in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-2 lead and never look back as they beat the Reading Fightin Phils (64-70) on Friday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.

Damek Tomscha hit a RBI double off Trenton starting pitcher Nick Nelson in the top of the first inning to give Reading a 1-0 lead. Darick Hall followed with a RBI single off Nelson to extend the lead to 2-0. The right-hander threw 39 pitches and only recorded two outs before being taken out of the game for relief pitcher Jordan Foley (4-4).

Gosuke Katoh hit a sacrifice fly off Blake Quinn (0-2) in the bottom of the first inning to cut Reading's lead in half. Quinn issued back-to-back walks to Wendell Rijo and Jeff Hendrix that allowed Trenton to take a 3-2 lead.

Jose Taveras pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Quinn. Seth McGarry backed that appearance up with three scoreless innings of his own. Kyle Dohy pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
