Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - Jake Wahlin scored twice, Jake Kielly made 32 saves and the Tri-City Storm held on late, busting by the Sioux Falls Stampede, 5-4, Friday at the Viaero Center.
The Storm held two-goal leads on three separate occasions during the contest, but kept the Stampede off the board in the waning stages of the third to edge to a one-goal win. Kielly made 16 saves in the final frame to earn his third win in season.
Wahlin finished with three points for the Storm, tying a season high, while Sioux Falls forward Parker Tuomie had a goal and three assists to lead the Herd.
Tri-City's early rush carried it to a 2-0 lead. First, Wade Allison's second of the season, assisted from the left post by Collin Rutherford and Andrew Peski at 6:57 of the first, gave the Storm a 1-0 lead.
Next, Wahlin notched his first goal of the game at the 10:20 mark of the first, sweeping a fluttering puck from the left post over Stefanos Lekkas, who made 31 saves and was tagged with the loss.
Collin Peters scored consecutive goals for the Herd separated by 2:40 to tie the game at two. His second of the game came 1:42 into the second.
With the game tied, it was time for the Storm's offensive machine to churn, striking twice on the man advantage. Wahlin scored a goal from the right corner at 11:25 of the second, taking a pass from Jake Kielly in the defensive zone, dancing up the ice, and winging a puck off the back of Lekkas' leg over the goal line.
Kielly earned the only assist on the tally, the netminder's first of the campaign. He had one helper last season with the Austin Bruins in the NAHL.
Next, Nico Sturm scored his sixth of the season at 15:55 of the second on the man up. Wahlin earned his third point of the night, driving the play to Meyer behind the net. Meyer found Sturm at the left post for the stash, the forward's sixth of the season.
Sturm finished with two points, one of eleven players to finish with points.
The Storm finished 2-for-5 on the man advantage and killed three of six chances by the Herd.
Tuomie's goal for the Stampede on the power play at 17:20 of the second cut the Storm lead to one, 4-3, heading into the final frame.
Paul Washe responded for the Storm, stuffing the puck under Lekkas in front of cage at 6:17 of the third, a key insurance rip that gave Tri-City a two-goal lead, 5-3.
After Jack Suter's goal from Tuomie and Rutkowski edged the game to 5-4, Kielly protected the house, snaring multiple saves in the final minutes to keep the Storm lead.
