Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms put together one of its best performances of the season Friday night in Lincoln, topping the league leading Stars by a final score of 4-1. Alex Esposito got Youngstown on the board just 37 seconds into the contest.
"Mo [Cam Morrison] won a battle down low to get the puck and found me open in the slot. Once we scored that early goal we felt good," Esposito said.
The Phantoms would take a two goal lead into the first intermission, after Ty Farmer was patient with the puck and found James Winkler cutting towards the net. It was Winkler's sixth goal of the season.
"I think we played a full 60 minutes of good, 200 foot hockey in both ends. Unfortunate to give up that late goal, but I still think we finished strong," said Farmer.
Kevin Conley gave Youngstown a 3-0 lead in the second period, capitalizing on a Lincoln turnover. Eric Esposito assisted on Conley's tally, one of two assists on the night for the younger Esposito brother.
Alex Esposito would notch his second goal of the game in the third period to give the Phantoms a commanding 4-0 lead. The Stars would score with less than a minute left in the contest to deny Youngstown its first shutout of the year.
"It was a good effort, I thought after we got that third goal we eased off our identity a bit. We had too many turnovers in the neutral zone, but our compete level was good and I admired our guys perseverance" said Phantoms Head Coach John Wroblewski.
Ryan Bednard was strong in net for Youngstown, turning away 29 of 30 Stars shot attempts.
The Phantoms will take on the Stars in Lincoln again tomorrow night, with puck drop set for 7p.m. Central Time.
