October 27, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New Orleans VooDoo News Release
The New Orleans VooDoo announced their 2005 regular season schedule today. The 2004 Southern Division champions will kick off their second season when they travel to the Georgia Force on January 29. The team will host the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats in their home opener two weeks later on Sunday, February 13 at the New Orleans Arena. The 2005 slate includes seven games against 2004 playoff teams and four prime-time regional television appearances on NBC. All 16 games can be heard on WWL Radio (870 AM) or WSMB Radio (1350 AM). Several VooDoo games will be broadcast on Cox Sports Television.
The VooDoo will play games against five playoff teams from last season (Chicago Rush, Colorado Crush, Orlando Predators, San Jose SaberCats and Tampa Bay Storm). The VooDoo will play home-and-home series with their four Southern Division rivals; Austin, Georgia, Orlando and Tampa Bay.
In an opening weekend matchup of teams with NFL ownership and a storied divisional rivalry, the VooDoo, who are owned and operated by New Orleans Saints Owner Tom Benson will make their season debut on January 29 at the Philips Arena against the Georgia Force, purchased this past off-season by Atlanta Falcons Owner Arthur Blank.
New Orleans then travels to Nashville to play the Kats in their home opener on February 4. Nashville is returning to the league after a three-year hiatus. The Kats are owned by Tennessee Titans Owner Bud Adams. New Orleans coach Mike Neu played for Nashville in 1997 and was an assistant coach from 1998-99. VooDoo QB Andy Kelly quarterbacked the Kats from 1997-2001, leading them to two ArenaBowl appearances.
The following weekend, the VooDoo will make their home debut at the New Orleans Arena, hosting the ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats on Sunday, February 13, which will be broadcast on NBC. Game time is 2 p.m.
Some of the other highlights of the 2005 schedule include:
· The VooDoo will play the other AFL teams operated by NFL owners; Georgia Force (Arthur Blank â Atlanta Falcons), Nashville Kats (Bud Adams â Tennessee Titans), Dallas Desperados (Jerry Jones â Dallas Cowboys) and Colorado Crush (Pat Bowlen â Denver Broncos and Stan Kroenke â St. Louis Rams).
· New Orleans closes out the season playing four teams with .500 or better 2004 records, starting with traveling to Tampa Bay on April 30 and then hosting Colorado on May 8. The following week, the VooDoo will host the Austin Wranglers in the home regular season finale on May 14 and then travel to Orlando for the last game of the regular season on May 20. The Playoffs are scheduled to start the following weekend from May 27-29.
