VooDoo add NFL veteran Alvin Porter to defense
October 27, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New Orleans VooDoo News Release
In their continuing effort to upgrade their defensive backfield, the New Orleans VooDoo signed NFL veteran Alvin Porter pending league approval, it was announced today by the team. As he prepares to make his debut in the indoor game, Porter will compete for a spot at the defensive specialist position.
Porter (5-11, 175, Oklahoma State) comes to the VooDoo after spending the past four seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals at the cornerback position. He has appeared in 33 games with five starts, recording 49 tackles, one interception, four passes defensed, 23 special teams tackles and one special teams forced fumble. Porter was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Ravens in 2001 and appeared in every game as a rookie, after making the 53-man roster, recording 14 special teams stops and one forced fumble. Porter's role increased in his sophomore season in 2002, as he started five games, appearing in all 16 for Baltimore and added 41 tackles and three passes defensed. Porter appeared in one game for the Ravens in 2003 and went to training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2004. Porter played collegiately at Oklahoma State for two seasons, recording 45 tackles and a team-leading three interceptions in his final season in 1999.
"Monty Montgomery provided an outstanding physical presence for us during the 2004 season," said VooDoo coach Mike Neu. "Since Monty has joined the New Orleans Saints, it has been a priority for us to find a replacement, both within our roster and through the free agent market. Alvin has the abilities to be an outstanding defender in the Arena Football League. His NFL starting experience will serve him well as he adjusts to the indoor game."
New Orleans VooDoo season tickets are now available for the 2005 campaign starting as low as $96 for the entire season. For additional information, please call (504) 731-1700.
