Vipers Week in Review

December 12, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), took two losses and a shootout loss in their three-game homestand last week, falling to the Danbury Trashers on Wednesday, December 7th and to Fort Wayne on Friday December 9th. The Vipers showed signs of life on Saturday as the Elmira Jackals came to town, but lost a heartbreaker to the Jackals in a shootout.

Wednesday, December 7th vs. Danbury

Danbury Trashers 5, Roanoke Valley Vipers 4

The Vipers picked up a three-goal lead on the visiting Trashers at two different times during the match on Wednesday, but weren't able to hang onto either, as Danbury took the win by a final score of 5-4 at the Roanoke Civic Center. Vipers captain David Beauregard scored first in the game, closely followed by a goal from rookie winger L.P. Martin, who has been on fire of late, leading the Vipers in scoring over the past five games with eight points (6 G, 2 A). Martin would score again in the second period. Gray Shaneberger would score his first goal of the season for Roanoke. David Shillington, Travis Smith, and Jan Jas each contributed two assists on the night for the Vipers.

Friday, December 9th vs. Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne Komets 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 1

The Fort Wayne Komets took control of the game early, scoring twice in the first period, only to be answered with one goal at the 16:53 mark by L.P. Martin, who scored his third goal of the homestand off assists from David Beauregard and Alex Jerofejevs to put the Vipers on the board. The Komets would add one more goal in the second, and an empty-netter with 57 seconds remaining in the third to secure the win.

Saturday, December 10th vs. Elmira

Elmira Jackals 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 3, Shootout

The Vipers faced the Jackals Saturday for the sixth time this season, and the two teams headed to a shootout for the third time in those six games. Jan Jas scored for the Vipers and L.P. Martin netted two goals of his own along with contributing an assist on Jas's goal. David Beauregard also had two assists on the night, both coming on Martin's goals. The Vipers and the Jackals battled back and forth for the lead throughout the game, but it would be newcomer Jason Sessa who would force the shootout for the Jackals, scoring at the 6:07 mark of the third period. Beauregard would be the only successful Vipers shooter in the extra rounds, as the Vipers came up short, unable to match the round two and round three goals Elmira got from Sean Regan and Konstantin Kalmikov.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers take on the Danbury Trashers for four straight games, beginning Wednesday and Friday, December 14th and 16th in Danbury, and ending Saturday and Sunday, December 17th and 18th at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Vipers will look to pick up some points in the division standings on the second-place Trashers.
