Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers gave up 16 hits in losing 11-1 to the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Edmonton starter Ricardo Rodriguez tossed a complete seven inning game giving up the one run on seven hits while not walking a batter and striking out five. The loss drops Calgary to 2.5 games ahead of the Cracker-Cats for first place in the North Division.
Edmonton wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a Marcus Nettles triple and a Chris Van Rossum run batted in single. After a Joe Jiannetti walk, Carlos Arroyo drove in Van Rossum with a base hit for the 2-0 lead.
Back scoring were the Cracker-Cats in the top of the second inning with a leadoff single by Dan Luyben, a walk to John Pasieka, and a sacrifice bunt laid down by Jonathan Castro. On the bunt third baseman Jorge Tang threw the ball away and that allowed Luyben to score. Nettles followed with a RBI single, Van Rossum walked, and Jiannetti hit a three run long ball for the 7-0 advantage.
Two more runs were added in the top of the fourth inning for the 9-0 score with a Nettles single, Ruddy Yan walk, and RBI base hits from both Van Rossum and Jiannetti.
A two out rally in the top of the sixth inning gave Edmonton double digits in runs at 11. Van Rossum doubled, Jiannetti singled, and Arroyo and Orlando Miller both notched RBI base knocks.
Calgary broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the inning with a Darryl Brinkley double and a Nelson Castro RBI single for the 11-1 score.
Brinkley extended his on base streak to 24 games with a three-for-three night.
In Game 2 of the double-header Dallas Mahan (3-1) will start for Calgary against Nick Peterson (1-2).
Thursday July 3rd at 7:05 PM (MDT) the series concludes with Joe Sergent (0-0) taking the ball against Joel Schmal (0-3).
The Vipers then head out onto the road for a ten day road trip which will see the Snakes play 11 games. Calgary starts by making their first ever appearance in Long Beach against the Armada Friday July 4th, Saturday July 5th, and Sunday July 6th. Next the Vipers will play the St. George RoadRunners with a double-header on Monday July 7th, regular game Tuesday July 8th, and another twin-bill Wednesday July 9th.
