Orange County Flyers News Release

The Orange County Flyers (22-9) jumped out to a six run lead before holding on to beat the Long Beach Armada (14-17) in the first game of a weekday double header.

Jermy Acey led the way going three for three with three RBI, two runs scored, and the big blow, a three run homer in the third to lead Orange County.

New Flyer Jesse Smith pitched six solid innings in his first start to pick up the win (1-0).

Patrick Breen got the Flyers going early in the first with an RBI single up the middle to score Jermy Acey.

Acey really did damage in the third, taking Long Beach starter Nick Bierbrodt over the left field wall for a three run homer to put Orange County up by four. Josh Arhart tacked on another run in the inning, doubling down the left field line to plate Jeff LaRue before a great block of the plate by Octavio Martinez prevented Fernando Pacheco from scoring on the play.

Dan Trumble got the Armada on the board with a monsterous homer over the left field wall, clearing the netting easily.

Long Beach picked up another run in the sixth, after Norm Hutchins singled and stole second Brett Flowers doubled down the right field line to draw the Armada within four.

Dave Bacani quickly got that run back in the bottom of the inning, blasting his fourth homer of the year to left.

The Armada kept fighting in the ninth, as Julian Williams walked before the second out was recorded. Still, back to back doubles from Steve Moss and Chris Klemm pulled long beach within three. But Ruvalcaba was able to strike out Hutchins to close the door and preserve the win.

The teams took a 35 minute break before meeting in game two.
