RHP Evan Greusel & OF Claudio Arias Named GBL Safeway Players of the Week

(Dublin, CA. July 2, 2008) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that RHP Evan Greusel of the Calgary Vipers has been named Safeway Pitcher of the Week while OF Claudio Arias of the St. George Roadrunners has been named Safeway Player of the Week for their performances during the fifth week of the 2008 Golden Baseball League season.

Greusel, 28, 6-3, 215 lbs is a right-handed pitcher who was drafted out of the University of Oklahoma in the 17th round of the 2002 draft by the Florida Marlins. After three years in Florida's minor league organization he was released and immediately signed by the Calgary Vipers in their inaugural season in 2005. He has gone on to become the winningest pitcher in Viper history as he compiled a record of 24-10 for Calgary prior to this year. Greusel won the Pitcher of the Week Award in Week One and now is the first repeat winner in 2008. During Week Five, Greusel posted a record of 2-0 in two starts while throwing 13 innings in which he struck out 10 and had an E.R.A. of 0.69.

Arias, 26, 6-2, 200 lbs is an outfielder who was signed as a free agent by the Boston Red Sox in 2002 out of the Dominican Republic. He played five seasons in the Red Sox farm system reaching High-A in the Carolina League before being released. He joined the Roadrunners a couple of weeks into the season and has excelled in the field and at the plate. During Week Five he posted a batting average of .533 as he led the league in hits (16), RBIs (11), Total Bases (33) and was second in Runs (11) while blasting 3 home runs.
