St. George RoadRunners News Release

EL CENTRO - The St. George RoadRunners have had a hard time this season keeping the Yuma Scorpions offense below double digits in the run column. Tuesday night in El Centro, led by a quality start by Mac Nelson, St. George held Yuma to just two tallies in a 3-2 victory.

Nelson, the rookie right-hander from Orem, held the high-powered Scorpion offense at bay for six innings and allowed two unearned runs in the seventh. In only his second professional start, Mac struck out eight batters and allowed only ten to get on base.

Ryan Stevenson set the plate for St. George's first run with a solid single to left off Yuma starter Jorge Perez. Greg Lemon lined a ball past the bag at first into the corner for a RBI triple.

Stevenson continued his hot hitting by powering an opposite-field home run to left in the fifth inning to give the RoadRunners a 2-0 lead. The hit extended Stevenson's current hitting streak to 11 games.

Yuma tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a Ryan Barba two-run single scoring A.J. Valentine and Maikal Jova.

Mike Done relieved Nelson and threw a perfect eighth inning.

Perez left the game after eight innings scattering two earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight.

St. George pushed the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. Yuma reliever Mike Martin walked Dustin Hicks and Trever Dimick to start the inning. Stevenson grounded to short on a slow roller, allowing Hicks to advance to third. Lemon hit a hard liner to right off James Garcia for a sacrifice fly plating Hicks with the eventual winning run.

The Scorpions made it interesting in the ninth off RoadRunners lefty Jason Norderum. Jeremy Cleveland singled and advanced to third on a Jose Rodriguez hit. Norderum intentionally walked Hector Bernal to load the bases with zero outs. Barba would strike out swinging on three pitches. Norderum caught Darrick Hale looking on a 2-2 count. With two down, Rich Janeway had a chance for a third walk-off hit of the season. On another 2-2 count, Norderum blew a fastball past Janeway to nail down the RoadRunners victory.

Done notched the win, his first since 2006 in Reno, and Norderum worked hard for his second save. Martin (0-1) gets pegged with the loss in only his second Yuma appearance.

Game three of the four-game set is back in Yuma on Wednesday night. First pitch from Desert Sun Stadium is at 7:05pm Pacific. The RoadRunners will send Jason Lakman (0-0, 5.40ERA) to the hill while Yuma is expected to counter with Evan White (3-1, 3.12).

The RoadRunners Radio Network - Sports Radio 1210 ESPN and Network1Sports.com - will be on the air with the Infowest Pre-Game Show beginning at around 7:50pm Mountain time. John Potter will be live from Yuma with the pitch-by-pitch action.
