Scorpions Drop One in the Ninth Inning

July 2, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release

The Yuma Scorpions and St. George Roadrunners have put up some of the largest run totals of the year for the Golden Baseball League, when they have faced off. Yet, in El Centro, CA, a neutral site game, the Roadrunners and Scorpions found themselves in a tight duel through the end of the game.

Neither team got more than 7 hits or scored more than three runs, yet it was that third run scored by the St. George Roadrunners in the top of the ninth that sealed the deal for the win.

The Scorpions sent veteran, Jorge Perez, to the mound to face the high powered offense of the Roadrunners. Although Perez would get himself into jams, he was able to work out of almost every one. The Roadrunners scored in the top of the third thanks to back to back hits to lead off the inning. Ryan Stevenson would come around to score on a RBI triple by Greg Lemon. Lemon would also get the RBI in the ninth to win the game.

The Roadrunners would score one more time against Perez in the top of the 5th inning. This time it was thanks to a solo HR by Ryan Stevenson. Perez would give up just one more before he was pulled at the end of the eighth. He allowed 7 hits and 2 runs in eight innings.

The Scorpions would face just as tough of pitching competition out of Roadrunners starter, Mac Nelson. Nelson would have an even more impressive performance. He would go seven innings, but give up 0 earned runs, unfortunately thanks to his defense he would walk away with a no decision when the Scorpions scored 2 runs on an error by the second baseman.

The Scorpions would score their only two runs off the Roadrunners pitching staff in the 7th inning. AJ Valentine would start the inning off with a single followed by a fielder's choice by Maikel Jova. Valentine would make it to second thanks to that error by the second baseman. Ryan Barba would get the 2 RBIs thanks to a single to plate Valentine and Jova.

Mike Martin would be brought in to start the ninth inning off for the Scorpions. Martin would walk the first two men he faced and then throw a ball to the next man before being pulled by Manager Mike Marshall. Marshall would bring in James Garcia to try and get through the inning. Garcia would get the first out thanks to a fielder's choice by Ryan Barba to get the man at second. Unfortunately, Greg Lemon would get a sacrifice fly to plate Dustin Hicks.

The Scorpions would threaten in the night loading the bases in the ninth inning without any outs. But Jason Norderum, the closer, would work his way out of his jam for the save.

The Scorpions and Roadrunners have two more games left in this four game set. These games will both be played at Desert Sun Stadium on Wednesday, July 2nd, and Thursday, July 3rd. Wednesday, July 2nd, will by bald night at the stadium, allowing those who no longer have hair to enter the stadium free of charge. The game will start at 7 pm. Thursday, July 3rd, is a big night at Desert Sun Stadium, featuring Military Appreciation night at the stadium.
