September 15, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release
(Yuma, AZ. September 15th, 2011) Yuma Scorpions center fielder Joey Gathright has been promoted from the Boston Red Sox Triple-A team, the Pawtucket Red Sox, and will join Boston in the Major Leagues immediately. Gathright was signed by the Red Sox organization on August 31st after hitting .347 and stealing 20 bases for the Scorpions. Gathright was the third Scorpions player to be signed by a MLB organization in 2011. Now, he has a chance to impact a very tight playoff race in the American League East.
For Pawtucket, the speedy Gathright hit .375, driving in two runs and stealing a base over the course of 4 games. The Red Sox, looking for players that can get on base and get into scoring position, recognized the versatility that Gathright provided in Yuma and in Pawtucket and did not hesitate to add him to the active roster this week. Currently, the Red Sox are 4 games behind the Yankees for the lead in the AL East, and are 4 games ahead of the Rays in the AL Wild Card, but are just 3-10 in the month of September. The Red Sox are hoping that Gathright can be a spark plug for an offense that has had a difficult time generating runs for the last few weeks.
