Dellaero Caps Comeback with Walkoff Single

July 30, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
St. George RoadRunners News Release

ST. GEORGE - Stepping in for his fifth plate appearance, Jason Dellaero had struck out three times and bounced into an inning-ending double play. Previous ills were forgotten as he lined a pitch into left field scoring Henry Calderon from second with the game-winner in Friday night's 8-7 comeback win over the Victoria Seals at Bruce Hurst Field.

The former big leaguer cashed in on Aaron Easton's first pitch offering after Calderon walked and Brett Flowers singled against P.J. Bevis (L, 0-2).

After an RBI groundout from Jermy Acey plated Vic Buttler in the first, the Seals built a 7-1 lead over two frames against Raymar Diaz. Four extra base hits including a two-run Dale Swinford double were assisted by a two-run single by Terrence McClain in the six-run second inning. Wilver Perez notched a third inning tally plating Swinford on a two-out double. Diaz was on the hook for a loss allowing seven runs on 10 hits while fanning four before a middle innings rally from St. George eased the righty's nerves.

Isaac Hess looked in form - cruising through four innings of one-run, three-hit baseball. He found out the RoadRunner bats come alive quickly and in spurts with two away in the fifth. Buttler blooped one of his four singles into left to spark the rally. A pair of RBI doubles from C.J. Lang and Yosvany Almario coupled with run-scoring singles from Acey and Flowers to cut the Seals' lead to 7-5.

Hess' night ended after a Lang single in the sixth inning plated Diaz. Chris Bodishbaugh entered and surrendered the lead when Almario tripled into the right-centerfield gap for the inning's second run.

Relief from both teams was solid in the next two innings. Bevis only allowed four base runner without a hit before the ninth for the Seals. Rob Naegele and Brian Holliday worked out of a jam in the seventh leaving Colin Moro stranded at third. Monte Mansfield worked a perfect eighth with a strikeout and Jose Obispo went 1-2-3 for the win in the ninth setting the stage for the dramatics in the bottom half of the inning.

St. George swatted 14 hits - Buttler leading the charge with four single and Lang adding three more. Three Victoria hitters - Perez, Swinford and Hess - each swatted two hits apiece in a 10-hit team effort. Perez also crept closer to the GBL single-season record for stolen bases swiping one base in the second. His total of 49 puts him two back of tying Jon Kaplan's record of 51 set as a member of the Long Beach Armada.

Games two and three will be contested in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 4:05pm. LHP Jon Dutton will get the ball in game one while newly acquired LHP Chuck Tiffany will debut as the starter in game two.

Audio coverage will begin at 4:00pm with John Potter on the RoadRunners Radio Network - ESPN SportsRadio 1210 and online at Network1Sports.com.
