Victoria Seals on Verge of Stolen Base Record
July 30, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - With still well over a month remaining in the regular season, the Victoria Seals second basemen Wilver Perez is just four stolen bases away from setting a new single-season Golden Baseball League record. The Dominican Republic native currently sits at 48 stolen bases, just behind the existing record of 51 set by Jonny Kaplan of the Long Beach Armada in 2007.
The second-year Seals infielder is on a torrid pace in 2010, and is projected to surpass the previous mark by as many as 15 stolen bases. Immediately following a three-game suspension in the month of June, Perez was at his hottest - stealing 27 bases over the course of his next 25 games while hitting over .350 in the same span.
Although the Seals will play more regular season games in 2010 than the Armada did in 2007, Perez' numbers are still staggering by comparison. Through 55 games this season, Perez has 48 stolen bases (0.87 per game) while after the same number of games in 2007 Kaplan had swiped a total of 41 stolen bases (0.75 per game).
In fact, Perez has stolen second and third base on the same sequence on four different occasions this season, while posting a remarkable 15 multiple-stolen-base games since the beginning of the year. He is a jaw-dropping 29 stolen bases ahead of second-place Fehlandt Lentini, who has 19 swiped bags for Na Koa Ikaika Maui in 2010.
In total, the Seals have a 19-12 record when Perez steals a base this season, with the former Kansas City Royals prospect now sitting atop the franchise record list with 72 careers stolen bases in Victoria. The Seals are also on pace to surpass the team stolen bases record, currently owned by the 2008 Edmonton Cracker-Cats (136). Through 58 games played this season, Victoria has 113 stolen bases (1.9 per game), which is also 27 more than second-place Maui.
The Seals begin a six-game road trip beginning tonight in St. George, Utah. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m. (PT), and will not be covered on the Victoria Seals Broadcast Network. Fans can still tune into the game by listening live to John Potter at www.stgeorgeroadrunners.com.
Victoria returns home the following weekend to open up a series against the Tucson Toros at Royal Athletic Park. Game one is Thursday, August 5th at 7:05 p.m. (PT). Tickets are available now by calling (250) 220-7777 or by purchasing online at www.victoriaseals.ca.
