Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce that right-handed pitcher Anthony Pluta has been signed to a contract by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He is the fifth player to be signed out of the Seals organization, and will attend Angels spring training camp before the start of next season.
Pluta, the native of Las Vegas, Nevada, is set to make is fourth appearance in affiliated baseball after being selected by Houston Astros in 3rd Round (97th overall) of 2000 MLB amateur entry draft. The 28-year-old veteran appeared in 22 games for the Seals this season, including 12 games as a starter - the most since his sophomore season in 2002. In his ninth year as a professional, Pluta notched a 6-4 record through 77.0 innings pitched, while posting a 4.56 earned runs average to go with 81 strikeouts.
"We are absolutely thrilled to see Anthony get this opportunity with the Angels," said Seals General Manager Roxann Bury. "He is a class act both on and off the field, and has really earned this chance after two strong seasons here in Victoria."
Prior to joining the Seals, Pluta spent four seasons in the Astros system, playing a combined 69 games between Class A- and A+ levels. Throughout his professional career, the Las Vegas High School graduate has also appeared in the Northern League, American Association of Independent Baseball and with the St. George RoadRunners in the Golden Baseball League. In two seasons with Victoria, the former Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers prospect has appeared in 28 games, and currently ranks third in franchise history with 91 combined strikeouts.
Pluta becomes the 17th Golden Baseball League player acquired by a Major League Baseball organization this year, joining Austin Bibens-Dirkx (CHC), Isaac Hess (BOS), Sergio Pedroza (LAD) and Chris Bodishbaugh (CHW) as the fifth player signed out of the Seals organization in the past two seasons. The signing marks the 116th time a Golden Baseball League player has advanced to an affiliated contract since the league's inception in 2005.
