Diaz Goes The Distance To Defeat Tucson 5-1

July 26, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
St. George RoadRunners News Release

The St. George RoadRunners avoided a series sweep at the hands of the host Tucson Toros thanks to a complete game outing from staff ace Raymar Diaz. He allowed just one run on five hits and struck out three while the STG bats swatted 13 hits en route to a 5-1 victory on Sunday night at Hi-Corbett Field.

Diaz (5-6) surrendered his only run in the Toro third. After a pair of hits and a sac bunt put runners in scoring position, Josh Womack's sacrifice fly plated Ryan Priddy. Tucson would only get two more runners into scoring position the rest of the evening.

The complete game was Diaz's second of the 2010 season - the other was an eight-inning loss to Maui in Hawaii.

St. George took the lead in the second inning when Henry Calderon led off the frame with a single and stole second. Nick Fitzgerald lined an RBI double and took third after the throw home made it to the backstop. On the next Vince Davis pitch, Nick Spears grounded a ball past the drawn-in infield for a 2-0 lead. After a two out walk, C.J. Lang floated a ball into left field cashing in Spears for the final tally.

Spears added another RBi in the fifth with a two-out single to left field scoring Yosvany Almario.

Lang brought home the final insurance score in the eighth bringing in Vic Buttler with a double.

Davis (3-6) took the loss for Tucson allowing four runs on 10 hits over seven innings. Jesse Orosco, Jr. scattered a run on three hits in his two frames.

St. George and Tucson now travel to Bruce Hurst Field to continue the home-and-home series. Monday night, LHP Jon Dutton will matchup against Tucson's John Bannister. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
