Orange County Flyers News Release

The Orange County Flyers became the first team to sweep the Chico Outlaws with their third come-from-behind win of the three-game series, 3-2, at Nettleton Stadium on Sunday night. The Flyers improved to 5-3 in the second half and 27-26 overall, the first time the club was over .500 since June 6.

Starting pitcher Jesse Smith led the way with eight strike outs over eight innings of work, his longest outing of the year, allowing two runs on seven hits for his third win of the season. Smith (3-3) turned the ball over to closer Andre Simpson for a 1-2-3 ninth inning and the save (10).

David Harris led the offense with a hand in all three Flyers runs, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and run scored.

Chico struck in the first inning when J.J. Sherrill singled and stole second base. Maikel Jova doubled him home for the early 1-0 Outlaws advantage.

Harris led off the fifth inning with a single for Orange County, and stole second base. After advancing to third on a Tyler Keeble ground out, Harris scored on Alex Jamieson's RBI ground ball - Jamieson's fourth RBI of the three-game series - that second baseman Anthony Manual overran for an error.

The Flyers extended their lead in the sixth. Steve Boggs began the inning with a single and Derek Perren walked to follow. After the next two batters were retired, Keith Ginter drew a walk to load the bases. Harris popped a ball into center field, but Mitch Einertson couldn't locate it until the ball was dropping in front of him for a two-run double to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.

Smith limited the Outlaws after the 1-run first inning, facing the minimum three batters in four of his next five innings of work. Smith allowed a pair of two-out singles in the seventh, but got a ground ball off the bat of Pasqual Del Real to get out of the inning.

Smith got into trouble in the eighth inning after a lead-off error allowed pinch-hitter Bobby Hill to reach base. Two batters later, Anthony Manuel singled to put runners on first and second. A J.J. Sherrill fielders choice left runners on the corners with two outs, and Maikel Jova singled home a run to pull Chico within one, 3-2. Smith struck out former big leaguer Mike Rose to get out of the eighth with the tying run in scoring position.

The Flyers are off Monday before heading to Yuma for three games against the Tijuana Cimarrones at the Ray Kroc Baseball Complex. The teams will play Tuesday night at 7:00pm and a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 6:00pm. According to the league office, Tijuana is hosting games in Yuma until the Cimarrones complete stadium repairs at their home facility.
