Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. (12/22/2010) - The Orange County Flyers learned that the Boston Red Sox have signed 2010 Manager Paul Abbott to coach their Lowell Spinners team for the 2011 season. Flyers Exec. VP of Player Personnel Harris Tulchin had this to say upon hearing the news: "We are thrilled for Abbie. He did an incredible job with our players, taking us deep into the playoffs this year and we know, working with their young pitchers; he'll be an indispensible asset to the entire Red Sox organization. We talked about this a lot this year with Abbie, and he knew our goal has always been to give all our managers, coaches, and players a platform to quickly move into major league ball. With Phil Nevin last year, and Paul Abbott this year, it seems that the big leagues are taking serious notice.
Abbott in his first season at the helm of the Flyers, lead the team to a record of 51 -35 with a winning percentage of just under .600 as well as a second half GBL playoff berth in which the Flyers ultimately fell in a the Division series in a fifth and final game to Maui.
Abbott also played for the Flyers back in their inaugural season in 2005 before being traded to the Yuma Scorpions mid season. Paul ended up back in a Flyers uniform in 2009 as the Flyers pitching coach under then Manager Phil Nevin who was just promoted to manage the Triple A farm team for the Detroit Tigers.
"My time with the Flyers was the richest experience and really most fun I've had in organized baseball, and while its is sad to leave OC, I am very excited about returning to affiliated ball and joining the storied Red Sox franchise, helping to develop great young pitchers for the parent club" The Flyers wish Paul the best of luck with his new team and hope to see him back in a major league uniform soon.
