Vipers edge RailCats in 12 innings
August 1, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
Carlos Duncan led off the top of the 12th inning with a double off the fence and came in to score when the next batter, Brandon Rogers, drove him in with an RBI single to break a scoreless tie and lift the Vipers to a 1-0 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Tuesday afternoon.
The Vipers didn't pick up a hit until the top of the ninth when Manabu Kuramochi reached on an infield single to break up Willie Glen's bid for a no-hitter. Calgary and Gary combined for just eight hits in the game.
Calgary's pitching staff of Ryokan Kobayashi, Geoff Freeborn, Kieran Mattison and Brad Rogers was very good in the contest, allowing just four hits in 12 innings of work. Rogers (4-0) earned the win after pitching the final three innings, allowing just one hit.
Reliever Travis Kerber (1-4) took the loss for Gary after giving up the double to Duncan and base-hit to Rogers in the top of the 12th inning.
RailCats' starter Willie Glen wound up with a no-decision but may have deserved better as he held the Vipers offense without a hit for eight innings before Kuramochi finally got Calgary going.
Gary had chances to move ahead in the game but couldn't cash in any base runners. The RailCats twice put runners on third in the second inning but couldn't convert and again put a runner on third in the bottom of the third inning but couldn't bring him in.
Rogers also left a RailCats' runner stranded on third base in the bottom of the 11th when he caught Mike Coles looking for the third out of the inning.
Calgary couldn't get much going offensively for most of the game but were finally able to put a run up in the 12th when Duncan doubled off the right field wall and scored on Brandon Rogers' base-hit to right.
Brad Rogers then retired the RailCats in order in the bottom of the 12th to preserve the victory.
With the win, the Vipers even their second half record at 9-9 and make up 1/2 a game on the Winnipeg Goldeyes who will face the Edmonton Cracker-Cats on Tuesday evening.
The Vipers and RailCats will play the rubber match of their series on Wednesday evening in Gary at 6:05 PM (MDT). Calgary will then move on to Joliet for a three-game series against the JackHammers beginning on Thursday night before returning home on Monday, August 7 to open a series at Foothills against the RailCats.
