Jackhammers win second straight in Kansas City; tied for first place

KANSAS CITY, KS-First baseman Will Henderson (3-4) hit two solo home runs and scored all three runs to lead the Joliet JackHammers to a 3-2 win over Kansas City before 4,527 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Tuesday night. The JackHammers (8-9) have now won two in a row after snapping a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Kansas City Monday night. With the Schaumburg Flyers losing to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Tuesday night, Joliet is now tied with Schaumburg for first place in the Northern League East Division.
Kansas City started off the scoring against Joliet starter Eric Fussell in the first inning. J.D. Foust (1-4) led off the game with a single and stole second base. Greg Jacobs' (0-4) groundout pushed Foust up to third base. Foust scored on an RBI single by Charles Peterson (1-3) to make it 1-0 T-Bones.
Joliet tied the game with a run in the second inning. With two outs Henderson singled, went to second base on a wild pitch by T-Bones starter Larry Robles and scored on a past ball. Henderson's run tied the game at 1-1.
Fussell yielded a run to KC in the third inning. The JackHammers tied the game at 2-2 when Henderson hit his first of two home runs. He powered a pitch from Robles over the left-field wall to tie the game at 2-2.
In the sixth inning, Henderson hit an opposite field home run when he launched a solo shot onto the grassy hill area over the right centerfield wall at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The JackHammers had all the runs they needed at 3-2.
Henderson finished the game with a single and two home runs. Fussell went four and one-thirds innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out five.
Victor Kleine (1-2) got the win by pitching two and two-thirds scoreless innings. He didn't allow a hit or walk and struck out four. Logan McElwain (0-2) allowed one run in two innings pitched to take the loss for Kansas City.
The JackHammers and T-Bones wrap up their three-game series Wednesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Kevin Cheppenko (3-4, 3.40) takes the hill for Joliet. Hank Woodman (3-2, 7.27) gets the start for Kansas City. First pitch is at 7:05 and pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 on 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
Joliet returns home Thursday night August 3 to take on the Calgary Vipers. It's Thirst Quenching Thursday at Silver Cross Field.
