JackHammers RHP Wes Alsup Signs with Braves

Joliet - The Joliet JackHammers are proud to announce RHP Wes Alsup has signed with the Atlanta Braves organization. Alsup was signed by the JackHammers on June 28, 2010 after finishing his college career at UT-Martin.

In 22 games with the JackHammers this season, Alsup pitched 26.1 innings while recording an impressive 2.05 ERA by allowing just 6 earned runs. Alsup held opposing hitters to a .161 batting average while striking out 21 batters. Alsup became a staple in the JackHammers bullpen during their post season run.

Aslup became the first player from the 2010 roster to sign with an affiliated club. He joins the ranks of Tim Byrdak, Brian Mazone, Derrick Ellison, and Taylor Wilding to be signed by an affiliated organization.

JackHammers General Manager, Jamie Toole was very excited when he heard the Braves were interested in signing Alsup. When the news became official he twitted "Congratulations to the 2010 JackHammer pitcher Wes Alsup on signing with the Atlanta Braves. Good luck with the Braves Wes!"

Richard Mercado Named to Northern League Post Season All-Star Team

Joliet - Joliet JackHammers catcher, Richard Mercado, was named to the 2010 Northern League Post Season All-Star team today. In 5 post season games, the 2010 All-Star catcher recorded a .350 batting average and a .435 on base percentage. Mercado collected 7 hits, 3 runs scored and 2 doubles in 20 at bats.

Mercado was acquired from the Schaumburg Flyers on August 24, 2010 for future considerations. In just 12 regular season games with the JackHammers, Mercado hit .429 with 2 home runs, 4 stolen bases and 10 runs batted in.

Mercado was selected to the 2010 Northern League All-Star team as a member of the Flyers. He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 12th round of the 2004 draft out of the University of Arizona. Mercado currently resides in San Clemente, California.
