HIDALGO, Texas, December 6, 2014 - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (5-4) corralled the Idaho Stampede (3-5) 135-123 tonight at State Farm Arena. RGV's 79 first half points, ranks second in Vipers all-time first-half points. The Vipers scored 84 first-half points at Idaho on March 31, 2010.

Jaron Johnson led the Vipers 29 points, followed by Akil Mitchell with a double-double 25 points and 11 rebounds. Earl Clark recorded 22 points. Geron Johnson scored 13 points, and Tony Bishop added 12 points. Akeem Richmond tallied 11 points. Gary Talton scored 9 points and 16 assists.

Kevin Murphy led the Stampede with 30 points. Joel Wright scored 26 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Jerrelle Benimon with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Tre' Bussey added 14 points, and Reggie Hearn scored 12 points.

Mitchell opened the game with a dunk to put the Vipers on the scoreboard 2-0. Murphy responded with a layup to tie the game at 2-2. Early in the game, the lead changed four times. Then, Akil Mitchell made a layup to take the 12-11 lead for the Vipers with 7:42 on the clock. The Stampede remained close until the Vipers made a 13-2 run to take a 34-22 lead with 1:29 left in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter, RGV led 37-28.

With 2:38 remaining in the first half, Mitchell made a dunk to give the Vipers a 75-49 lead - their largest lead of the game.

The Stampede outscored the Vipers 38-29 in the third quarter. A shot from beyond the arc by Hearn closed Idaho's deficit to 104-94 with 1:21 on the clock. At the end of the third quarter, RGV was up 108-96.

A layup from Benimon with 8:43 remaining in the game put Idaho within 110-104 of RGV. Clark responded with a three-pointer, and Benimon sank another shot for the Stampede. Jaron Johnson connected on a three-pointer and was fouled. The four-point-play put RGV ahead 117-106. With 3:58 remaining, Jaron Johnson shot another three-pointer to give the Vipers their largest margin of the fourth quarter 129-122.

The Vipers hit the road next week when RGV travels to Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT). Then, RGV visits the Westchester Knicks Friday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. (CT).
