Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - The Erie BayHawks (5-4) never trailed Saturday night while using a 19-5 run to open up the game, followed by a 17-2 run to start the third quarter to take a 93-82 win in the first ever matchup against the Grand Rapids Drive (4-4). Seth Curry scored a season high 29 points that included four threes while Drew Crawford followed closely with 27, surpassing his season high total from last night (26) and snagged 10 boards to record a double-double. Peyton Siva was a game time decision and eventually sat out due to a sore ankle.
After a strong start for the BayHawks, backed up by two Curry threes and Crawford's 12 points, the Drive ended the first quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to just five after trailing by as many as 14. Erie was able to get the lead back up to double digits early in the second thanks to three straight Daniel Coursey field goals, eventually holding an 18 point lead. Curry, Crawford and Coursey combined for 45 points in the first half as Erie led the Drive 55-41. Grand Rapids shot just 33% (14-42) in the first half.
The BayHawks went on their longest run of the season to start the third quarter and led by as many as 29 points halfway through the frame. After eight unanswered points from the Drive, it was reserve John Bohannon who hit two big field goals to get the lead back into the 20's as the BayHawks were up 82-59 heading into the final stanza.
Another Curry three ended a 10-2 Drive run to start the fourth quarter. After maintaining an 18 point lead with just over six minutes to go in the game, Grand Rapids went on another big run, this time scoring nine straight points to cut the BayHawks lead in half. After two Drive missed field goals to extend their run, Crawford nailed a two with 1:21 left to weather the storm and ultimately win 93-82, ending Grand Rapid's four game winning streak.
Coursey added 10 points and 7 rebounds while Curry and Crawford totaled 56 of Erie's 93 points (60%). Bohannon and Jarvis Williams each had five assists off the bench. Grand Rapid's Lorenzo Brown led the way for the Drive scoring 17 points and snagged nine boards. Willie Reed was the only other player to hit double digits for the Drive as he had 13 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Erie is now 3-1 against the Central Division.
The BayHawks start their second three game road stretch of the season as they travel to Santa Cruz to take on the Warriors on Saturday night and then head to Reno to face the Bighorns the next day. Erie will then be hosted by the Maine Red Claws who are first in the Eastern Division before returning home on the 20th to take on the Iowa Energy.
