Victoria Seals News Release
Wailuku, HI - Making their first-ever stop on the Hawaiian Islands, the Victoria Seals opened up a six-game series against Na Koa Ikaika Maui on Tuesday night. Sending Jason Kershner (4-2) to the hill for his team-leading ninth start of the season, the Seals matched up against David Seccombe (2-1) in search of a fourth consecutive victory.
Opening the scoring in the top of the second inning, the Seals jumped out to a 3-0 lead when back-to-back singles from Brian Rios and Matt Edgecombe set up a three-run blast off the bat of Colin Moro, his fourth home run of the season.
Bouncing back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, Maui got on the board with the help of an error to Wilver Perez to allow Phil Avlas to reach before an RBI groundout courtesy of Paul Nishimura cashed the unearned run.
Following a scoreless third inning of play, Victoria padded their lead when another set of singles from Rios and Edgecombe preceded a run-scoring double from Colin Moro to put the visitors up 5-1. Before the frame was out Perez was hit by a pitch and Dale Swinford drove in another pair with a double to stretch the Seals advantage to 7-1.
With Jason Kershner cruising through the seventh inning, and both Aaron Easton and Jeff Duda strong in their single innings of relief, the Seals won their first game on the Valley Isle by a 7-1 score over Na Koa Ikaika.
Jason Kershner picked up a well-deserved fifth win on the season, while David Seccombe took the loss for Maui. Colin Moro had a standout night for the Seals, posting a 3-for-4 game and four RBI's while a pair of runs batted in from Dale Swinford capped the Victoria offense.
