Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals continued to crush the baseball in Golden League action on Wednesday night at TELUS Field, extending their winning streak to nine games with a 14-5 blowout over the Tijuana Cimarrones.

Thanks to their torrid winning streak, the Caps have a 25-15 record and sit in second place in the GBL's North Division. During their winning streak, they've averaged an impressive 11.6 runs per game.

Left fielder Larry Bigbie got the Capitals' red-hot offence going in the first inning with a towering two-run home run to right-centre field, his eighth of the season. Two batters later, third baseman Cliff Brumbaugh crushed a solo homer to left field to make it 3-0 for the home side. The blast was the all-star's league-leading 13th homer and 50th RBI of the season.

The Caps really caught fire in the fourth, as catcher Nick Valdez got in on the home run action, driving in a pair of runs with his first long ball as a member of the Capitals. Bigbie and right fielder Tom Collaro added RBI singles, and Brumbaugh and third baseman Alex Prieto drove in runs with doubles later in the inning to make it 10-0 Edmonton.

"It seems like we're meshing really well ... we've got some great chemistry and we're just smoking the ball," said Valdez, a 24-year-old native of Bronx, N.Y., who came to the Caps two weeks ago from the Colorado Rockies system. "I'd been struggling lately, so it felt good to barrel one out, and hopefully I can stick with it. We have enough firepower to win in any situation. I'm loving it so far."

Sherwood Park's Lou Pote got the start on the mound for the Caps and continued his impressive season, picking up the win and improving to 4-1 on the year. He scattered 10 hits and five runs over seven innings and struck out six Cimarrones. Jesse Oster came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings.

The Capitals are set to take on the Cimarrones once again on Thursday night at 7 p.m., and be sure to get to TELUS Field on time, as the Edmonton Oilers' top prospects will be in attendance to throw out the ceremonial pitches and watch the action on the field. Those prospects include highly-touted young players like Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson.

Fans in attendance at Thursday's game will also have a chance to watch the action with the future NHL superstars. Tickets in the Party with the Prospects Zone, presented by 630 CHED, JOE FM and CISN Country 103.9, are available at any Ticketmaster location or by visiting capsbaseball.ca.

In addition to the Party with the Prospects coming up on Thursday night, it's also another 4 for $44 Thursday, as fans can purchase 4 reserved grandstand tickets, 4 hot dogs and 4 Pepsi products for just $44.
