Outlaws Go Extra Innings In Tucson; Down Toros 5-3

July 7, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

The Chico Outlaws had to play an extra inning on Tuesday night in Tucson, but it was well worth it as the Outlaws take game one of the three game series 5-3 in ten innings.

Kris Honel got the start for the Outlaws (31-9) looking for his seventh win of the year and ended up with a no-decision after pitching six and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on just three hits, striking out seven.

Chico got on the board in the top of the first with an unearned run on an RBI groundout by JJ Sherrill, scoring Mitch Einertson, who reached on an error by third baseman Wally Backman Jr. to lead off the game. The Toros committed two errors in the first inning.

Two more runs came across home plate for the Outlaws in the third. Einertson led off the frame with a single and was followed by Bobby Hill, who also singled. Sherrill then got his second RBI of the night on a single to plate Einertson. One batter later, Ismael Castro singled home Hill to make the score 3-0 Outlaws.

Tucson got a run home in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jim Rushford to cut the lead to 3-1.

Honel found some trouble in the Tucson seventh inning when shortstop Ryan Priddy tripled to start things off. Catcher Luis Apodaca then hit into a fielder's choice on a ground ball right back to Honel on the pitcher's mound. Honel's throw to third base to catch Priddy off the bag was high, allowing Priddy to slide back in headfirst safely. With runners on the corners, leadoff hitter Ron Perodin hit a ground ball to third base to score Priddy, making it a one-run game at 3-2.

The Toros tied the game at three apeice in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Francisco Plascencia off Chico reliever Rusty Jones.

Josh Dew (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Outlaws to get the win.

The Outlaws got to the Toro's Andrew Snowden in the top of the tenth inning to score two runs, giving the Outlaws a 5-3 lead. Einertson singled to lead off the inning and went to second on a Sherrill sacrifice bunt. Right fielder Mikael Jova then singled to cash in Einertson with the go-ahead run. Jova then scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Snowden.

Closer Matt Perisho picked up his fourth save of the year after pitching the bottom of the tenth. The Toros threatened by putting the first two batters on base via singles, but Perisho shut the door on the next three hitters to seal the win.

Tucson drops to 19-21 on the year with the loss.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 7:00 pm as rightie Garret Holleran goes against Tucson's left-hander John Bannister.
