Chico Outlaws News Release
EDMONTON - Tom Collaro's two-run homer broke a scoreless tie in the sixth, as the Edmonton Capitals held on for a 3-1 win over the Chico Outlaws on Saturday night at Telus Field.
Chico's Jonny Bravo and Edmonton's Jesse Smith locked horns in a terrific pitchers duel. The difference was one mistake by Bravo. In the sixth, Carlos Duncan singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Collaro belted a 2-1 pitch from Bravo over the left-field wall, his 14th homer of the season, to give the Capitals the lead for good. Collaro collected three of the four Edmonton hits in the game. Bravo (4-5) went six innings and allowed just four hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out five.
Smith was cruising along until the seventh, when he loaded the bases with nobody out and was removed from the ballgame. Brian McFall singled, and Jake Rife and Adam Buschini each walked on four pitches. Chad Blackwell was summoned from the pen and allowed just one run to score, as Will Wright drove in McFall with a sacrifice fly. Blackwell struck out Pat Terry and Matt Hibbert to limit the damage.
Smith (1-0) was fantastic in his Capitals debut. He went six plus innings and allowed seven hits and one run. He walked two and struck out five. Blackwell pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Tom Boleska picked up his eighth save with a scoreless ninth.
Edmonton now leads the season series 13-6, with the final game to be played on Sunday afternoon. They have eight of the ten games against the Outlaws at Telus Field.
