
One out Away, Vipers Tumble

Blowing a ninth inning lead the Calgary Vipers (50-28) were defeated 8-6 by the Yuma Scorpions (33-50) before 4011 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Leading 6-5 with one out left to record the Vipers surrendered three runs after early squandering a 4-0 advantage. Claudio Galva (0-3) took the loss after allowing three unearned runs on three hits and one walk. With the loss the Vipers drop into a first place tie atop the North Division standings.
Out of the bullpen Saskatoon's Dan Morari tossed an inning and a third scoreless with two strikeouts while Matt Hammons collected a three up, three down frame.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jonny Kaplan was hit by a pitch and Wilver Perez collected a run batted in double for a 1-0 lead while for Perez it was his league leading 50th straight game reaching base.
The Vipers stretched their lead in the second as Al Quintana singled, Drew Miller walked, and Lino Garcia clubbed his sixth home run of the season for three RBI and a 4-0 score.
Yuma cut the lead in half to 4-2 in the fourth frame when Jose Canseco singled, Jared McDonald doubled, Jonathan Jaspe singled in one, and Arnoldo Ponce grounded out for a RBI.
The Scorpions took the lead at 5-4 in the fifth inning as Jesse Alfonso followed by Joey Gathright singled, Patrick Brooks reached on a fielding error by Perez, Canseco collected a sacrifice fly, McDonald doubled in a run, and J.J. Muse singled in the go ahead marker.
Calgary quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Bryan Burke laid down a perfect bunt single and with two outs Jimmy Rohan drove him in with a double for a 5-5 tie.
In the seventh frame the Vipers retook the lead at 6-5 as Kaplan singled, Rohan doubled, C.J. Ziegler was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Chad Ehrnsberger walked for a RBI.
Yuma rallied in the ninth when Zach Larson reached on a fielding error by Rohan, Gathright singled, with two outs Canseco walked to load the bases, McDonald collected a RBI infield single which Rohan committed a throwing error on to allow a second run to score, and Jaspe singled in one for a 8-6 advantage.
Calgary will conclude their home 2011 regular season on Toonie Tuesday August 23rd with a double-header against the Edmonton Capitals at 3:00 and 6:30. The two teams will also matchup at Foothills Stadium on Weiner Wednesday August 24th at 6:30.
Playoffs for the Vipers will start on Tuesday August 30th against the Edmonton Capitals.
