Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
SAN ANGELO - After storming back to take a 13-11 lead in the ninth inning, the WhiteWings could not close the game out, surrendering three runs in the bottom of the ninth to lose a 14-13 heartbreaker.
The WhiteWings trailed 11-9 in the eighth inning before rattling off four unanswered runs to take a lead into the bottom of the ninth inning before losing the lead.
The WhiteWings held a lead in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings before blowing the lead in the bottom half of each inning.
Julio Santana was brought on to face the Colts in the bottom of the ninth inning after closer Edgar Martinez was out of commission due to a high pitch count the night before.
Santana allowed two walks and a single to load the bases before Ronnie Gaines hit a two-RBI single to tie the score at 13. CJ Beatty then hit home the winning run with a single into right field.
Santana (4-6, 5.60 ERA) gets the loss for the WhiteWings while Sean Kramer (3-5, 8.03 ERA), who was in line for the blown save and loss, slips into the win column.
The WhiteWings trailed 11-10 in the top of the ninth inning, before the WhiteWings scored three runs against closer Sean Kramer. Welington Dotel led off the inning with a double, which was followed by a Wilmer Pino RBI triple to tie the score at 11. Leive Ventura then drilled his team-leading 19thhomerun over the centerfield wall to give his team a 13-11 lead.
Yet it was all for naught as the Colts scored three in the bottom of the ninth to walk off winners.
With the WhiteWings trailing 8-5 entering the fifth inning, the Wings scored four unanswered runs to take a 9-8 lead. After scoring runs in the fifth and sixth innings to draw within one, David Peralta hit a double into right-centerfield to score two runs as the WhiteWings took a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh inning.
While it took the WhiteWings three innings to take the lead, it took the Colts three batters to take it back. Brian Nichols led off the bottom of the seventh with a homerun to tie the score at 9. Next batter, Landon Camp singled to left as Clay Calfee stepped to the plate to hit him home, taking an 11-9 lead.
That set up a wild comeback for the WhiteWings, but it wouldn't matter as the Colts put three runs across the plate in the bottom of the ninth to win it.
LHP Juan Cedeño (3-0, 5.50 ERA) is expected to take the mound tomorrow night for the WhiteWings against Alfredo Caballero (0-0, 14.54 ERA).
