Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals posted a momentous 9-5 victory over the Chico Outlaws on a scorching Sunday afternoon in front of 3,502 fans at TELUS Field, completing a four-game series sweep, improving their record to 51-29 and vaulting them past the Calgary Vipers into first place in the North Division.

Thanks to their fourth straight win over Chico on Sunday, the Caps jumped 0.5 games ahead of the provincial rival Vipers in the North American League's North standings. The Alberta squads now play their final eight games of the regular season against each other and will then square off in the division championship playoff series, with home field advantage yet to be decided.

After winning in a 3-1 pitchers' duel on Saturday night, the Caps produced three times as much offence on Sunday, led by second baseman Matt Rogelstad, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored.

Shortstop Enrique Cruz also made a big contribution going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI, while catcher Lou Santangelo chipped in with two runs scored and one RBI.

On the mound, the Caps got another solid team effort, starting with Mike Hrynio who scattered five runs and nine hits over 4.2 innings with four strikeouts. Jorge Vasquez replaced him and tossed 2.1 perfect innings with three strikeouts, and Bartolome Fortunato picked up the save by tossing the final two innings, giving up a pair of hits and striking out one Outlaw.

The Caps and Vipers play a double-header starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and a single game on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., both in Calgary, before heading back to Edmonton for a five-game series running Thursday through Sunday, with a double-header slated for the final day of the regular season.

Thursday's series opener is the final Thirsty Thursday of the season, presented by Hudsons Canadian Tap House, 100.3 The Bear and 104.9 Virgin Radio, featuring beer on sale for $3.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
