Vasquez Nearly Hits for Cycle as Spikes Top Jammers, 5-2

JAMESTOWN, NY - Jesus Vasquez collected just three hits and finished just a double shy of the cycle, while Luis Heredia and Clario Perez combined to limit the Jamestown Jammers to two early runs and help the State College Spikes to a 5-2 victory on Saturday night at Russell Diethrick Park.

Vasquez, who hit his first home run for the Spikes (28-25) on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, added his second State College homer with a towering solo shot to left field that capped the Spikes' scoring. The Bonao, Dominican Republic native also added a triple in the third inning and singled in the fifth while scoring a pair of runs. Vasquez had a chance at the cycle in the eighth inning, but grounded out to the shortstop.

Heredia (3-1) struggled a bit with four walks on the mound, but allowed just two runs and three hits while striking out two over five innings. The 18-year-old righty also elicited a 4-6-3 double play in his last inning of a victorious effort.

Perez (1) delivered his best outing in a State College uniform to finish off the Spikes' win, tossing four shutout innings while spraying four hits and a walk. The right-hander also struck out a season-high six batters, tying for the most in a single outing by a Spikes pitcher this season.

Jamestown (21-30) scored the first run of the game on a Jesus Solarzano double to plate Cody Keefer in the third inning, but State College took control of the contest in the fifth. Jammers reliever Helpi Reyes (1-5) walked a pair of batters and gave up a single to Vasquez to set up a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Gaffney that tied the game, 1-1, before being lifted for Ramon Del Orbe.

Once Del Orbe entered the game, Walker Gourley and D.J. Crumlich gave him a rude welcome. Gourley rapped an RBI single to right to score the go-ahead run and Crumlich followed with a two-run double to give the Spikes a lead they would not relinquish. The Jammers responded with a run in the fifth, but Vasquez's blast the next inning ended the scoring.

Gourley and Crumlich each produced multiple hits in the game for the Spikes, while Gaffney reached base three times on a single and two walks. The six walks drawn by State College as a team was the most for any single game in 2012.

Spikes catcher Jacob Stallings, who was added to the National League squad for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game late Friday, threw out his 18th would-be base-stealer of the year, the most in the league.

Reyes was tagged with a total of three runs, all earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out two for the loss.

Solarzano, Kentrell Dewitt and Yeison Hernandez all put up multi-hit games for Jamestown.

Sunday, the Spikes finish their six-game road swing through the state of New York with a 1 p.m. matinee matchup at Russell Diethrick Park to complete a two-game set against the Jammers. 19-year-old righty Clay Holmes (4-1), who leads the New York-Penn League with a 0.83 earned run average, is scheduled to get the start for State College. Jamestown is slated to go with right-hander Mason Hope (1-3).

The Spikes will also be welcoming a temporary addition to the pitching staff tomorrow as left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes is set to join the team on rehab assignment from Triple-A Indianapolis. Reyes spent time in the Major Leagues for the Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles from 2007-11.

After the New York-Penn League All-Star break, the Spikes will come back home to Medlar Field at Lubrano for a four-game homestand starting on Wednesday, August 15. State College will take on the Jammers in a two-game set that includes a Canvas Print Giveaway presented by The Spa at Kenlee to the first 1,000 fans of all ages on the 15th. Plus, fans can bring their dogs to the ballpark on a leash or in a crate for Bark in the Park II presented by Metzger Animal Hospital on the 16th.
