Spinners Battle Back for 13 Inning

FISHKILL, NY - Earlier in the 2012 season, a win like this was nonexistent for the Lowell Spinners. However, in Hudson Valley on Saturday night, great defense, clutch hitting and a little bit of luck came together as Deven Marrero crushed his second home run of the season with one out in the 13th inning and Lowell defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 6-5 in 13 innings.
The win was the team's 13th in their last 15 games and it cemented the white-hot Spinners into second place in the Stedler Division, as Vermont fell to Brooklyn.
For the second night in a row, Lowell (25-28) jumped ahead early as Mike Miller reached second on an error, moved to third on a single by Deven Marrero and scored as Dreily Guerrero grounded out to first base. The Spinners then tacked on another run in the second as Matt Marquis and Aneury Tavarez led off the inning with back-to-back singles, advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and after a walk to Tim Roberson, Marquis scored as Zach Kapstein bounced into a double play.
However, Hudson Valley (35-18) picked away at the lead in the second as shortstop Ryan Dunn doubled to right and moved to third on an error by Mookie Betts. He scored on a groundout to David Chester to cut the Spinners? lead to one. That lead disappeared in the third inning as Justin Haley hit the first batter of the inning with a pitch, gave up a single to the second and after a strikeout, catcher Luke Maile singled up the middle to tie the game at 2. Dunn then grounded into a fielder's choice to put the Renegades up by one.
Tavarez then tied the game in the sixth inning, lifting a wind-aided homerun over the right field wall, his third of the season. However, Hudson Valley grabbed the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Spinners, who have found a fighting spirit that was missing through most of the first half of the season, immediately answered in the seventh as Marrero reached on a fielder's choice, stole his 17th base of the season, moved to third on a balk and trotted home on a two-out Chester RBI single.
The seesaw affair continued as Renegade designated hitter Richie Shaffer crushed the first pitch of the seventh by Raynel Velette over the left field wall for his second homerun of the season to put Hudson Valley back up by one but Lowell would not be denied as Miller stroked an RBI single in the top of the eighth through the left side that scored Tavarez to tie the game at 5.
The game was a nailbiter throughout, as Hudson Valley loaded the bases with one out in the tenth and seemed to be on the precipice of pulling out a tough victory, but Jadd Schmeltzer was able to induce a rare 5-2-6 double play to neutralize the threat. Two innings later, with runners on first and second and one out, Schmeltzer snagged a line drive back to the mound, which induced a 1-4-6 double play to work out of a jam.
Marrero's homerun in the 13th was a no-doubter, as the left fielder did not even bother turning around.
Haley battled through his worst start of 2012, giving up three runs on six hits in three innings. He struck out three and walked none. Velette struggled with his control, walking four in six innings, but kept the Spinners in the game, working out of numerous jams. Schmeltzer (1-3, 9.88) battled to secure his first victory of the season while Greg Larson, who closed in college for the Florida Gators, collected his first professional save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Marrero, who had been slumping as of late, made his second hit of the night count as the Spinner offense stroked 13 hits, led by Guerrero with three, Marquis and Tavarez each with two. Over his last six games, Tavarez is hitting .363 to raise his average over .300. For the second night in a row, eight of the nine starters reached base.
The Spinners go for the sweep, and their fourth win in a row, as well as their seventh road win in a row as Madison Younginer (0-0, 0.00), a member of the 2010 and 2011 Spinners and current member of the Greenville Drive, makes a rehab start before being followed by the Lowell bullpen. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
