Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers went into their first match up of the year with Pickney Division leader, the Auburn Doubledays, wanting to send a clear message. The message they were looking to send was that the Pickney Division was far from over because the Scrappers will have a say in the winner of the division after all. Well message delivered loud and clear as the Scrappers pounded out 12 hits and 9 runs on their way to a 9-2 win in Auburn. The Scrappers offense wasted little time jumping on Auburn starter, Brett Mooneyham. Logan Vick walked with 1 out in the top of the 1st inning. After Vick advanced on a wild pitch, Charlie Valerio singled him home for the early lead. It was the 1st of 4 RBI for Valerio on the night. Charlie would strike again in the top of the 3rd. Robel Garcia singled to start the inning. Jairo Kelly then walked. Both runners moved up a base on a Vick ground out. Valerio then singled on a 0-2 pitch to plate both runners for a 3-0 lead. The game was put away in the top of the 6th.
Hunter Jones laid down a bunt single to start the inning. Erik Gonzalez followed with a bunt. Doubleday's pitcher, Andrew Wall attempted to get the lead runner Jones but threw the ball into center field. Juan Romero made it hurt when he launched his 7th homerun of the year deep over the right field fence for a 3 run homer and an 8-2 lead. The Scrappers added their final run in the 8th inning when Vick and Valerio doubled back to back.
Jacob Lee got the start for Mahoning Valley and worked 3 scoreless innings. He scattered 5 hits while walking none and striking out 2. Lee leads the Scrappers with 40 strikeouts. Lee left the game before going 5 innings, so he was unable to qualify for the win. Geoff Davenport followed Lee. Davenport picked up his 2nd win of the year by working 4 innings while scattering 2 hits. He allowed 2 runs while walking 4. Robbie Aviles worked the 8th and 9th inning to finish off the victory.
The Scrappers will finish their 2 game series with the Doubledays tomorrow before coming home for the All Star break. The next game at Eastwood Field will be the 2012 New York Penn League All Star Game on Tuesday August 14th. The Scrappers next home game will be August 15th. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets for both games.
