Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (30-21) committed four errors on Friday night, which lead to two unearned runs, allowing the State College Spikes (27-25) to come away with a 4-2 victory at Falcon Park. The four errors matches the season-high this summer for Auburn.
All four State College runs came after the Doubledays had taken a 2-0 lead. Three of the Spikes runs came in the seventh, when State College sent eight batters to the plate. The inning began with a fielding error by SS Mike McQuillan, which allowed DH Samuel Gonzalez to get to first. That was followed by CF Tyler Gaffney getting hit by a pitch, which put two aboard with no outs. Left fielder Walker Gourley advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and then back-to-back singles by 3B D.J. Crumlich and catcher Jacob Stallings plated both runners to make it 2-2. Crumlich would score the third run of the inning on a throwing error by Doubledays 3B Carlos Lopez.
The Spikes scored their fourth run in the eighth on an RBI single from Gourley. Gonzalez scored the run, as he had gotten on base after being issued a walk, and he had advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Spikes finished the game out-hitting the Doubledays 9-6, improving their record when out-hitting opponents to 20-0 this season
Auburn scored one run in both the first and fourth innings to build its 2-0 lead. In the first 1B Chris Marrero connected on a pitch and sent it sailing over the left field wall for his first homerun in his rehab stint in Auburn. In the fourth RF Wander Ramos reached first on a fielding error by 2B Jimmy Rider. That was followed by a triple off the bat of 3B Carlos Lopez.
RHP Pat Ludwig (3-1) came away with the win for State College, pitching three innings of scoreless and hitless relief. RHP Silvio Medina (0-3) suffered the loss for Auburn, as he also pitched three innings in relief and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits. LHP Blake Monar started for the Doubledays and last four innings, without surrendering a run on six hits.
The Doubledays begin a two-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Saturday, August 11. Auburn will send LHP Brett Mooneyham (1-1) to the mound for his sixth start of the year. He will take on RHP Jacob Lee (4-1) for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. It will be the second Tompkins Trust Community Night of the summer. Plus, since it's a Saturday there will be fireworks following the game presented by Tompkins Trust.
