Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS: The Hudson Valley Renegades dropped a heartbreaker 6-5 in 13 innings Saturday night to the visiting Lowell Spinners in front of 4,718 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades (35-18) squandered multiple extra-inning opportunities to overcome the Spinners (25-28), falling at last after a solo homer from top prospect Deven Marrero in the top of the 13th. Hudson Valley has now lost two straight for just the second time since July 8.
The Spinners opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Leadoff man Mike Miller reached second on a fielding error by first baseman Michael Williams, and moved to third on a single by Marrero. A Dreily Guerrero groundout scored Miller, making it 1-0 Spinners.
Lowell extended their lead in the next inning, as they led off the frame with back-to-back singles off Hudson Valley starter Matt Spann. A wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases, and a run came in when Zach Kapstein rounded into a 4-6-3 double play. The 'Gades got out of the inning without further damage, trailing 2-0.
Hudson Valley struck back in the bottom of the second, as shortstop Ryan Dunn doubled on a blooper into shallow center field and moved to third on a throwing error by second baseman Mookie Betts. With one out, third baseman Leonardo Reginatto grounded to the right side, scoring Dunn to cut the lead to 2-1.
The 'Gades surged ahead in the third inning, with center fielder Joey Rickard being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Second baseman Tommy Coyle singled Rickard to second base, and catcher Luke Maile hit a one-out single to score Rickard from second and move Coyle to third. Dunn followed up by grounding into a 4-6 force out and beating the throw to first, which gave Coyle enough timje to score the run and make it 3-2 in favor of Hudson Valley.
Lowell and Hudson Valley traded offensive punches starting in the sixth inning. Aneury Tavarez slammed a solo homer for Lowell in the sixth, and the 'Gades answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from left fielder Marty Gantt. Marrero came home on a two-out single from David Chester in the top of the seventh, but Richie Shaffer pushed the Renegades back ahead 5-4 on a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh. Another two-out single scored Matthew Marquis from third in the top of the eighth, and the score was knotted up at 5-5.
The Renegades had multiple chances from then on, but couldn't pick up any runs. Hudson Valley had runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but a force out made it runners on the corners with two outs, and Betts made a sensational diving catch to end the inning. The 'Gades loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the tenth, but Joey Rickard bounced into a 5-2-6 double play to end the inning.
Hudson Valley put runners on first and second with one out again in the twelfth, but a line drive off the bat of right fielder Joel Caminero ticked off the glove of reliever Jadd Schmeltzer (1-3) straight to Betts, who flipped to Marrero to double off Dunn for the third out. That set up Marrero's one-out homer to left field off Brandon Henderson (4-2) in the top of the 13th, and the 'Gades went in order in the bottom of the inning for the loss.
Spann gave up two runs (one earned) over five innings on five hits and three walks against two strikeouts. Reliever Reinaldo Lopez coughed up two runs on three hits and a walk in two innings, striking out two. Dylan Floro allowed a run on two hits and a walk in his two frames of action, fanning two. Henderson took the loss, allowing a run on three hits and a walk against five strikeouts over four innings.
Lowell starter Justin Haley gave up three runs on six hits and three strikeouts over three innings. Reliever Raynel Velette allowed two runs on three hits and four walks in six innings, whiffing five. Schmeltzer got the victory, allowing four hits and a walk but no runs over three innings; he struck out two. Greg Larson came on to pitch a perfect 13th inning for his first save.
The Renegades will look to avoid the sweep Sunday, with lefty Sean Bierman toeing the rubber for Hudson Valley against rehabbing Lowell righty Madison Younginer.
