Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BROOKLYN, NY --- ÃÂ Kevin Plawecki and Eudy Pina both had two hits including a solo home run as the Brooklyn Cyclones handed the Vermont Lake Monsters their fifth straight loss with a 6-3 New York-Penn League victory on Saturday evening at MCU Park.
Brooklyn scored twice in the bottom of the first inning as a walk and single put runners on the corners before Vermont starter Michael Ynoa balked home the first run of the game. Plawecki followed with an RBI single to left for a 2-0 lead. The Cyclones added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth as Lake Monsters catcher Bruce Maxwell was charged with a missed catch error on leftfielder John Wooten's throw home on a Brandon Nimmo single that scored Pina and Phillip Evans followed with an RBI single.
Vermont got on the scoreboard in the fifth as Jacob Tanis singled with one out and later scored on an Austin Booker two-out double. Lake Monsters had a chance for more runs in the inning, but Wooten lined out to center for the third out with the bases loaded. Brooklyn got the run back in the bottom of the fifth as Plawecki led off the inning against reliever Andres Avila with his fourth home run of the season.
The Lake Monsters then cut the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs on a walk and two infield singles before Addison Russell singled home Wilfredo Solano and Tanis for two runs. Brooklyn again got a run right back as Pina led off the sixth against Avila with his fourth home run of the season for a 6-3 lead.
Russell went 3-for-5 with the two-run single, while Tanis and Kelvin Rojas each had two hits as Vermont outhit Brooklyn 10-9. Ynoa (0-2) allowed two runs on two hits with four walks in just 2 1/3 innings for the loss, while ÃÂ Stuart Pudenz tossed two perfect innings and Tucker Healy a perfect eighth inning as the two relievers combined to strikeout seven of the nine batters they faced.
Julian Hilario (2-3) gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts over the first five innings for the win, while Paul Sewald struckout two in the ninth inning for his fourth save. Nimmo and Evans both had two hits as Brooklyn (33-20) won for the seventh time in its last nine games.
Vermont (24-29) has now lost five straight games for the second time this season (July 17-21) to fall five games under .500 for the first time since the end of the 2009 season. The Lake Monsters look to salvage one game on the six-game roadtrip at Brooklyn on Sunday starting at 5:00 pm, then take two days off for the New York-Penn League All-Star break before opening up a six-game homestand at Centennial Field on Wednesday.
