Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, OH) Former big league lefty Anthony Vasquez baffled the Akron RubberDucks for seven innings Saturday night, giving up just one run on six hits in a 7-1 Bowie Baysox win at Canal Park.
The Baysox (48-40) have won both games of the series so far, holding the RubberDucks to a combined three runs. Akron has lost four straight. With Richmond's 5-4 win over Reading on Saturday, The RubberDucks now trail the first-place Flying Squirrels by four games.
Vasquez, a 27-year-old free agent pick-up by the Orioles at the beginning of the regular season, hurled a season-high seven innings to pick up his second win in his last three starts. Vasquez (3-5) scattered six hits, walked none, and fanned seven, which matched his season-best. The only run he allowed came in the fourth inning when Tony Wolters tripled and scored on Adam Abraham's groundout. He left after allowing a pair of singles in the eighth, but righthander Julio DePaula came on and retired the next three hitters. DePaula then worked the ninth for his second save.
The win avenged Vasquez's 5-0 loss to the RubberDucks in Bowie back on May 28th . On Saturday, he never allowed two runners on base at the same time until the seventh inning. He lowered his ERA to 4.98.
Vasquez is trying to resurrect his career after being released by his original organization, the Mariners, in spring training.
He made seven big league starts for Seattle back in 2011, going 1-6. His lone big league win was against the Indians. In 2012, his season was cut short by shoulder trouble and a ruptured blood vessel in his brain, which required surgery to repair.
The loss was pinned on Akron starter Will Roberts (8-9), who gave up four earned runs over seven innings. Roberts walked only one, but failed to record a strikeout. Bowie's Dariel Alvarez, Friday's night's offensive hero with a grand slam, drilled an RBI single to spark a two-run fourth inning rally to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead. They later added two more off Roberts, who left trailing 4-1, after seven.
Christian Walker drilled his league-leading 20th homer of the season off Elvis Araujo in the eighth, and Garabez Rosa cracked a two-run shot off J.C. Ramirez in the ninth to break the game open.
Anthony Gallas singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Wolters also had a first-inning double to go along with his triple to finish 2-4 on the night.
The RubberDucks (49-39) and Baysox will finish the series and homestand on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. LHP Tim Berry (4-4, 3.91) will start for the Baysox, and RHP Gabriel Arias (6-2, 3.25) is the announced starter for Akron. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
