Early lead not enough at The Diamond

The Fightin Phils (34-50) came out of the game red hot but fizzled late as the Flying Squirrels (53-35) won 5-4 on Saturday night. Reading scored four runs off seven hits in the first three innings and Chris Bootcheck suffered the loss in his Fightin Phils debut.

The Fightin Phils got on the board first as Kelly Dugan hit a two-run single off Ty Blach(7-4) to score KC Serna and Peter Lavin to take a 2-0 lead. A throwing error by Ricky Oropesa allowed Serna and Lavin to advance to second base and third base. Brock Stassi and Raywilly Gomez hit RBI singles off Blach in the top of the 3rd inning to extend the Fightins lead to 4-0. Scoring on the singles were Jake Fox and Kelly Dugan.

Richmond tied the game off Chris Bootcheck (0-1) at 4-4 in the bottom of the 3rd inning as Matt Duffy hit a RBI single which was followed by a two-run double from Mario Lisson. Devin Harris brought in the tying run on a groundout that scored Matt Duffy. The Flying Squirrels took the lead off Bootcheck in the bottom of the 5th inning as Mario Lisson hit a RBI single to score Matt Duffy who tripled in the previous at-bat.

Chris Bootcheck allows five runs off nine hits in five innings of work. He issued one walk while striking out three batters. Mike Nesseth tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Bootcheck as he gave up one hit and recorded one strikeout. Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez struck out four batters in two innings of work with one hit given up.

Cody Hall earned his tenth save as he retired the side for the Flying Squirrels in the top of the 9th inning. Flying Squirrels pitching retired the final 19 batters after the top of the 3rd inning.

The Fightin Phils and Flying Squirrels wrap up their season series tomorrow afternoon at The Diamond at 1:35 pm. Reading will send right-hander Severino Gonzalez (4-9, 4.91 ERA) to the mound.
