New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Matt Newman stroked a two-run single in the eighth inning to send the Fisher Cats (40-45) to a series-opening 3-1 victory over the Trenton Thunder (40-48) on Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Newman's base hit completed a three-run rally to give the Fisher Cats their ninth win in their last ten games.
Down 1-0 in the eighth, the Fisher Cats put together their winning rally against Trenton reliever Phil Wetherell (L; 0-2). A lead-off walk to K.C. Hobson began things, followed by a one-out infield single from Dalton Pompey. With runners at the corners Jon Berti tied the game with a bloop single to right field. A wild pitch advanced Pompey and Berti, and then Newman plated them both with his third hit of the night to put the Fisher Cats on top, 3-1.
The rally spared Matt Boyd a loss in his return to the Fisher Cats. The lefty spent the entire month of May with the Fisher Cats, but struggled to the tune of two losses and an 8.31 ERA in six starts. On Saturday night, he looked like a different pitcher.
He began the night with a strikeout in the first followed by an innocent two-out single. He struck out two in the second, and then added two more in the third. The latter two strikeouts were sandwiched around a home run by Ben Gamel, which give Trenton an early 1-0 lead.
After the home run, he retired the next nine hitters before Gary Sanchez doubled in the sixth. Boyd eventually stranded Sanchez to complete six innings for just the second time in a Fisher Cats uniform. He left allowing just the one run on four hits. He struck out nine and didn't walk a batter in the outing.
Gregory Infante closed the door in the ninth to preserve the 3-1 victory for his tenth save of the season. He sealed the victory for Casey Lawrence (W; 5-4), who extended his scoreless streak to 15.0 innings by working perfect seventh and eighth innings.
Newman finished the night 3-4, tallying three of the Fisher Cats' seven hits. Berti singled in his final two at-bats while picking up the tying RBI. Pompey and Andy Burns had the Fisher Cats other hits on the night.
Trenton's Zach Nuding (ND) was denied a win when Wetherell lost the lead in the eighth. He allowed just four hits over six scoreless innings.
The series comes to an end on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. The first 1,000 fan will receive a free Fisher Cats t-shirt courtesy of Bank of New Hampshire. After the game, all kids can run the bases thanks to the Buyers Beware Program. Tickets are available by visiting www.nhfishercats.com, stopping by the box office at the ballpark, or call (603) 641-2005.
Sunday's pitching match-up has RHP Scott Copeland against Trenton LHP Manny Banuelos. The game can be heard on the radio with Tom Gauthier and Dick Lutsk beginning at 1:15 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
