16 Innings Not So Sweet in 9-6 Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets lost a 16 inning marathon to the Erie SeaWolves, 9-6, on Friday. The 16 innings ties the longest game in franchise history. Brandon Nimmo went 2-for-6 with three RBI in the loss.

Erie started the scoring early against Gabriel Ynoa, making his Double-A debut, Jamie Johnson and Jason Krizan hit back-to-back singles to start the night. With one out, Steven Moya hammered a pitch to right field to make the score 3-0.

The B-Mets got a run back in the second against Jeff Ferrell. Brandon Nimmo hit a solo shot over the right-field wall to plate the first Binghamton run of the day and cut the deficit to 3-1.

However, the SeaWolves answered with a run in the third. Moya got the rally started with a two-out double. Ramon Cabrera then laced a single to center field to bring home Moya and extend the lead to 4-1.

The score stayed that way until the sixth. Ynoa gave up a single to Cabrera and a double to Dean Green to put runners at first and second and one out. Jack Leathersich entered the contest and gave up a sacrifice fly to Dixon Machado that brought a run home to put Erie on top, 5-1.

That's when Binghamton started its comeback. Dilson Herrera hit a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth. After a strikeout, Dustin Lawley walked. That brought up Jayce Boyd, who singled to centerfield to score Herrera. Nimmo came to the plate against reliever Will Startup and hit the gap in left-center field four a two RBI double that brought the B-Mets within 5-4.

Binghamton tied the game in the seventh. Startup walked sandwiched a Carillo hit-by-pitch between two walks to load the bases with one out. Slade Smith entered the game and gave up an RBI single to Brian Burgamy to tie the game at five.

The score remained tied into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Moya hit his second home run of the game over the right-field wall to put the SeaWolves up 6-5. The slugger finished the night 3-for-7 with three runs scored and four RBI.

The B-Mets answered in the bottom of the frame. Lawley hit a 0-1 pitch more than 400 feet to centerfield to tie the game at five.

The game remained tied until the top of the 16th against Ryan Fraser. With one out, Adam Westlake hit a solo home run to right-center field to break the tie. Machado then doubled and came home to score on a Johnson RBI single The SeaWolves added a final insurance run thanks to fielder's choice by Krizan and Eries took a 9-6 lead.

Binghamton threatened in the bottom of the inning. The team loaded the bases with two outs against Jose Valdez, but Jayce Boyd grounded out to end the game.

The teams combined to use 12 pitchers in the game. Ynoa allowed five runs on nine hits in 5-1/3 innings, while Ferrell let four runs cross the plate in 5-2/3 frames and struck out eight. Leathersich, Adam Kolarek, Jon Velasquez and Randy Fontanez went a combined 9.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one run. Ryan Robowski (4-0) went four scoreless innings and struck out six. Ryan Fraser took the loss (1-1) after allowing three runs on four hits in the 16th. Jose Valdez picked up his 12th save of the season.

The B-Mets (44-31) continue their home stand with a double header against Erie on Saturday at 6:05 PM. LHP Steven Matz takes the hill for Binghamton in game one against RHP Tommy Collier. POSTGAME NOTES: At 5:26 minutes, the game was four minutes short of the longest in franchise history...The B-Mets batters walked ten times and had 20 strikeouts...eight of nine Binghamton starters gathered a hit.
